A Message From The Director on Homeland
Security
The National Homeland Security Agency has increased
our national and state threat condition to level orange with
an associated high risk of terrorist attack. This threat condition
prescribes a high level of alert based upon intelligence gathering
that indicates the high likelihood of terrorist attack within
the continental U.S. Specific targets have not been identified
as a result of this new alert.
While Xavier has not received or been alerted
to any specific threats, the University wants to assure the
community that it remains vigilant in maintaining the highest
security measures possible at this time of higher national
alert. Students, faculty and staff should continue their normal
activity, but should report any suspicious activity immediately
and should check the University web site regularly for news
bulletins.
In the event of an actual emergency, the campus
community will be notified through a variety of mechanisms,
including the web, e-mail and voicemail. The University has
also taken precautions for responding to student and campus
needs in emergencies. During the heightened threat condition,
campus police offer the following safety tips as recommended
by Homeland Security.
Report suspicious activities by calling ext.1000
on campus or 911 off campus. Examples of suspicious activities
include unauthorized people in restricted areas and abandoned
parcels, bags, vehicles or other items..
- Closely monitor world and local events as
well as local threat advisories.
- Avoid leaving unattended packages, backpacks
or briefcases in public areas.
- Take reasonable personal security precautions.
Be alert to surroundings and avoid being in vulnerable situations.
- Maintain close contact with family to ensure
their safety and emotional welfare.
- Develop and review family emergency plans.
- Keep recommended immunizations up-to-date.
- If there is an attack, do not travel into
affected areas or an area that is an expected target.
- Know how to turn off power, gas and water
service to your home.
- Know what hazardous materials are in your
home and how to properly dispose of them.
- Keep emergency supplies accessible and automobile
fuel tank full.
We realize this is a difficult time for our
country. During the weeks and months ahead we should be alert
to announcements posted by officials who monitor the threat
of terrorist attack. One place to do this is at www.whitehouse.gov/homeland.
Information will also be posted on the Xavier
web site and the Xavier Campus Police
home page. Please direct any questions or concerns to
the office of safety and security at ext. 1000. |
