Campus Emergency Procedures
What is an emergency?
Do you know what to do if there is a fire of
explosion in a campus building ? How about a power outage
of chemical spill ? These are just some the emergency situations
you could encounter anywhere, including campus. Any accidental
or deliberate mishap or incident that could threaten the safety
of people or property is considered an emergency.
Two things are needed to effectively deal with
an emergency on campus: common sense and cooperation. Common
sense comes from each individual. It's important to keep calm
in an emergency. A coordinated effort of all campus resources,
plus assistance from outside public safety agencies, is often
required to control the situation.
The purpose of this brochure is to guide your
actions in an emergency situation on campus. The most important
thing to remember is to immediately contact the office of
campus police at ext. 1000. The department is located at 3868
Ledgewood Drive. Off campus, dial 745-1000.
Notification Procedures
Report all emergencies to the office of campus
police. These situations include:
- Personal injury
- Fire
- Power outage
- Broken water pipes
- Explosion
- Suspicious persons or package
- Crimes
These are the questions you are likely to be
asked when you call for help:
- What is the nature of the emergency ?
- Are people hurt ? If so, how many ?
- What is the exact location of the situation
?
- What type of emergency service may be needed
? (fire department, life squad, police. ect)
- Your name, phone number, and role at the
University.
- Description of suspect and method and direction
of travel.
Do not dial 911 to report an emergency. The
University telephone network is not designed to interface
with the county's 911 emergency communication system. A call
to 911 will only lengthen the response time of emergency assistance
on campus.
Campus Communications
Each building is assigned a building coordinator
and a backup building coordinator. If there is a situation
in your building or on campus that necessitates an evacuation,
the dissemination of information or other emergency response,
the building coordinator will receive and relay those messages.
The Xavier information desk (745-3201) staff
will receive instructions for the office of campus police.
You can reach the campus police at ext. 1000 or 745-1000 off
campus to obtain or pass along information about an emergency.
Any official information will be released through
the office of marketing and public relations. Rumors and speculation
can make a bad situation even worse. Marketing and public
relations, in conjunction with the office of campus police,
will coordinate the release of information to interested parties
on or off campus. Marketing and public relations can be reached
at 745-3331. |
