The XLC ApproacH

For learning to be sustainable, participants must experience the challenge of applying the new concepts in their own work environment. Learning must be an action verb. It is sometimes messy, and can involve some struggle. Without the application experience, you end up with superficial knowledge, not a deep understanding. At Xavier Leadership Center, we design programs around our clients' strategic business issues, using a multi-layered learning approach for maximum impact. Every XLC Custom Program is based on the principles of Facilitated Learning.

What is Facilitated Learning?

Facilitated Learning is an approach to training and development characterized by a high degree of involvement by students in all aspects of their own learning, from setting initial objectives to conducting final assessments. Our facilitators provide resources and support, while you and your team apply concepts and best practices in “real world” settings. Facilitated Learning is more about asking the right questions than giving the right answers--to guide you through the learning process, not dictate it. As we work with you and your team to solve urgent and important problems, you’ll help create your own breakthroughs in an environment of guidance, participation and hands-on learning. Our approach is that we teach, you apply, and we help by guiding and coaching.

Multi-Layered Learning

Since everyone learns differently, we believe in using multiple learning approaches to maximize impact. Our methodology blends conventional teaching of technical and business topics (based on identified client needs), leadership modules (equipping participants to apply what we teach, experiential learning (to immerse people in specially designed environments to promote deep learning) field trips (so participants can see with their own eyes, live examples in practice, and guest speakers (bringing fresh external perspectives). All of it is connected to a real business issue, problem or opportunity.

Here’s how it works:

Working with Xavier Leadership Center means that your training program is unique to you--and your organization. The following design process shows how we determine the best solution for your team.

  1. We meet with operating executives to help us better understand your company issues and culture. We invite them to identify a need or a goal within your organization that has strategic importance.

  2. Next, we define a specific business project (or a series of projects) that participants will be asked to work on

  3. We consider what knowledge deficiencies the participants might have that would hamper their ability to complete the selected projects, and let these define the technical and business topics that are to be taught

  4. The final program design is reviewed and approved

  5. XLC comp letes the curriculum design and selects the right faculty and facilitator team to deliver a meaningf ul learni ng experience
