How to Become a Writing Center Tutor

Undergraduates interested in becoming a Writing Center tutor must first complete ENGL 315/515 (Composition Tutoring), a three credit hour course taught most spring semesters by the Director of the Writing Center. Students who complete the course with a satisfactory grade are eligible to apply for tutoring positions in the Center.

Graduate students can apply for assistantships in the Writing Center through the Office of Graduate Services. Candidates are interviewed by the Director of the Writing Center in late spring if positions are available. Special consideration is given to English majors or Education majors with a concentration in English; with excellent writing skills as demonstrated by a record in English and/or other writing classes and activities; with experience working with students one-to-one or in a classroom setting; with strong knowledge of grammar, mechanics, and at least one paper format; and with some familiarity with computers and word processing software.

English 315 Description:

A course in which students both study and gain experience in the theory and practice of one-on-one conferencing in writing, Composition Tutoring focuses on the dynamics of the tutorial session, the writing process, rhetorical analysis, the study of error, the logic of grammar, revision, ESL issues, and writing in the disciplines. Students put their study of writing into practice by apprenticing as tutors for an English 101 course throughout the semester. As an upper-level composition course, both the content and written assignments for ENGL 315/515 additionally challenge students to develop both their knowledge and craft of writing.

The course is by no means limited to English and Education majors/graduate students, for whom its benefits may be readily identified. Composition Tutoring is for any student who would like to work in the James A. Glenn Writing Center or who intends to pursue a career which demands facility and proficiency in written expression and the ability to work cooperatively with others. Students should exhibit an interest in/commitment to writing and have earned a grade of B or better in ENGL 101 (Composition) or ENGL 115 (Rhetoric).

Contact the Director of the Writing Center if you are interested in becoming a tutor.
