For those of you receiving this e-newsletter for the first time, Women of Excellence was created by University President Michael J. Graham, S.J., to honor, extend and advance the legacy of Xavier and Edgecliff women by providing opportunities for women to grow as organizational and philanthropic leaders at Xavier. The Women of Excellence Council is a committee of his President's Advisory Council.

Mentoring Program Gets a Boost from WOX
WOX partnered with Career Services this summer to test a pilot program that would become the model for a University Mentoring Program. Focus of the mentor relationships ranged from career planning and resume critiques to job shadowing and conversations about career paths. At the conclusion of the program, mentors and mentees felt positive about the experience and most of the students opted to continue the relationship into the school year.
Women of Excellence has become a great source of mentors for the fall program as well. In fact, 75 percent of mentors identified for the fall program have come from the WOX web site.
But the Mentoring Program is still in need of mentors from a variety of industries and with varied backgrounds. If you or someone you know is interested in being a mentor, complete our online mentor application.

The Breen Lodge Oral History Project
Are you a woman who attended Xavier University between 1970 and 1980? Did you take advantage of women's programming offered at Breen Lodge? If so, you may be interested in participating in The Breen Lodge Oral History Project, a joint research project of the Women's Center, the department of social work, and center for teaching excellence. This project seeks to collect stories from people who were active in the programming offered at Breen Lodge, as well as the women and men who were active in discussing the coeducation of Xavier University. Social work students, Women's Center interns and others are participating in the project as a course option under the leadership of Jennifer Wies, director of the Women's Center.
The research project is designed to benefit multiple constituents. Students have an opportunity to implement a research project, which will enhance their understanding of course materials. Oral history participants will be provided a venue for sharing their story with students, as well as a copy of the final product. Finally, we will further our knowledge of the women's presence at Xavier, which will benefit the Xavier community as a whole. The oral histories will play a prominent role in celebrating the 40th anniversary of women in the day school, scheduled for the 2009-2010 academic year.
We welcome you to contribute to the Breen Lodge Oral History project as an oral history participant or interviewer. Please contact the Women's Center at 513-745-3940 or womenscenter@xavier.edu for further information about how to get involved.

40 Years of Women at Xavier
1969-2009
We're seeking ideas for events, speakers or special programs that will help us celebrate the legacy of women at Xavier. We also want to hear about Xavier women who embody the Jesuit identity as "women for others."
For more information or to tell us about other Women of Excellence, contact Norah Mock at 513-745-3573 or mockn@xavier.edu. |
Giving Circle Provides Funding for Special Projects
Since Xavier University President Michael J. Graham, S.J., hosted the inaugural Women of Excellence Giving Circle event at his apartment on June 24, membership in Women of Excellence Giving Circle is continuing to grow and several events are planned for the coming months.
The Women of Excellence Giving Circle is a new giving vehicle that allows members to have a direct voice in how their gift to Xavier University is directed. Funds collected through the WOX giving circle will be distributed to faculty, staff and student groups through a grant application process. Members of the Giving Circle will review the grant applications and vote on how the funds are distributed.
Upcoming Giving Circle events are scheduled for Oct. 9, 17, 19, 22 and Nov. 5.
If you are interested in attending or hosting an event, please contact Leigh Ann Fibbe at 513-745-3969 or fibbe@xavier.edu. |
