Women of Excellence

Graham, S.J., embraces the goal of Women of Excellence, which is to advance women as organizational and philanthropic leaders at Xavier. This group is a committee of his president's advisory council.

Mentoring Subcommittee Sponsors First Event

The Women of Excellence mentoring subcommittee sponsored its first event, "Girls' Night Out," on Oct. 25. Female members of the president's advisory council met with students of TRiO, an educational program funded by the U.S. Department of Education whose goal is to graduate first-generation college students and prepare them for a post-baccalaureate education or career.

Nine professional women met with 19 TRiO students to serve as role models and sources of encouragement and support. As a direct result of the event, four students requested a formal mentor relationship.

Events Subcommittee Hosts
Book Signing

The Women of Excellence events subcommittee hosted a private book signing and party on Dec. 6, which featured the new book, Life Begins and Ends with Girlfriends by Xavier alumna Betsy Kyte Newman and Judy Van Ginkel. The authors are members of the Women of Excellence Council with Betsy serving as vice chair of the council. Their book chronicles the significance of strong female friendships in the lifecycle of women. In addition to reading excerpts from their book, they invited the more than 50 women in attendance to share their stories. Steinmart and Sephora assisted in sponsoring the event.

Women's Center to Host
"1000 PeaceWomen"

Xavier's Women's Center will host "1000 PeaceWomen," an exhibit aimed at connecting and strengthening women's peace efforts around the globe so that a strong, cross-sectoral and global women's peace movement will emerge. The exhibit opened on Jan. 16 at the Women's Center located at 1415 Dana Ave. and will be open to the public from 9-5, Monday through Friday. Admission is free. Large groups are encouraged to call ahead. The exhibit closes March 14. The exhibit is open to the public from 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and admission is free. "1000 PeaceWomen" is an effort by PeaceWomen Across the Globe, working to make womens' roles as peace-builders more visible, more recognized and better supported globally.

Xavier's Women's Center provides advocacy and resources, advances learning and academic excellence, and promotes research focusing on women, girls, and gender in an effort to unite people in centering women. The center serves students, faculty, staff, alums, and community members—both men and women.
