Department Overview

The international business major prepares students for the global world of business by providing:

  • A solid foundation in the solving business problems
  • The distinct skills to solve international business problems and function effectively in the global arena
  • A sound understanding of cultures that exist across the global economy.

While many students select international business as their only major, others will double-major, with a second major in either:

  • One of the business functional areas—such as finance, marketing, or information systems—in order to enhance their job search and their business career. (Note that one course can count toward both this major and a major in marketing, finance, economics, human resources, or management.)
  • One of the modern languages, if there is a strong geographic preference. (The business language and other language courses may count toward both majors)

The international business minor provides similar preparation with less focus on acquiring cultural knowledge, language skills, and studying abroad.

If you are pursuing the major or minor in international business, you are strongly encouraged to expand your world-view and enhance your degree by participating in a study-abroad or work-abroad experience. And be sure to follow career strategies provided in Career, Outcome and Salaries.
