Finance Department

Department Overview

The department of finance seeks to prepare students for professional careers in the finance field by educating then in the concepts, skills and techniques of the discipline.

Beyond the University and College requirements, to major in finance a student must take 18 hours of advanced finance classes and an additional three hours of accounting. The required courses include Business Finance, Investments, Financial Management, Financial Cases and Problems, and Computer Applications in Finance. Finance electives may be chosen from courses such as Entrepreneurial Finance, Security Analysis, Options and Futures Markets, Financial Institutions and International Finance. The additional accounting requirement is fulfilled with Intermediate Accounting II or Financial Analysis for Managers.

In addition to traditional coursework, finance majors may elect to take advantage of co-operative education opportunities to gain work experience prior to graduation. These co-ops are available to students in their junior and senior years and provide credits toward graduation. Some recent internships have been with the following companies: Chiquita Brands International, Prudential Securities, Merrill Lynch, Cincinnati Bell, and Cincinnati Financial Corp.
