Accountancy DepartmentContact InformationProfessor Sandra Richtermeyer, Chair Department OverviewThe academic major in accountancy is designed to educate individuals who intend to pursue professional careers in accounting and to serve as a catalyst for preparing for professional examinations, such as the certified public accountant (CPA) exam. The upper-division courses in the major focus on financial accounting, information systems, cost management, taxation, and auditing. The department has developed a program to meet the 150-hour education requirement to sit for the CPA examination. The hours beyond those necessary to complete the undergraduate curriculum are applied toward a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree in which students may take additional accounting and taxation courses. Exceptional students may gain early admission to the MBA program and begin taking a limited number of graduate courses in their senior year. Students in the 150-hour program still receive a Bachelor of Science in business administration (B.S.B.A.) in accounting after four years. Another way that students may complete the 150-hour requirement is by having a double major in accounting and related fields, such as information systems and finance. To major in accounting, 21 semester hours of specified accounting courses must be completed in addition to the University core curriculum, the business core curriculum, and general electives. The required accounting courses beyond the principal courses are: one course each in taxation, cost accounting, advanced financial accounting, analysis of accounting systems, and auditing; and two courses in intermediate financial accounting. Students in the 150-hour program must take at least 24 semester hours beyond accounting principles. Elective courses that fulfill this requirement include Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, Accounting Internship, and Accounting Strategic Partner. Accountancy Advisory BoardThe accountancy advisory board helps the department formulate curriculum strategy with a view to insuring its currency, applicability and relevance to the corporate community. Advisory board members also are invited to serve as mentors for undergraduate students and participate in faculty recruitment. In addition, they provide strategic advice on the outreach activities of the department in order to enhance the department's corporate relationships. We welcome your participation in department advisory boards. If you desire further information, please contact Dean Ali Malekzadeh via email at malekzadeh@xavier.edu or by phone at 513 745-3206.
