Course Objectives

China is now one of the largest trading nations in the world.  It has become an economic powerhouse, and a vital link in manufacturing, services and other economic activities on a global scale.

This 3 credit-hour MBA course is designed to help students: (1) keep abreast of the rapidly changing market conditions faced by China in the global economy; (2) develop understanding and awareness about the many opportunities and challenges faced by businesses currently working with China; (3) apply the theoretical frameworks learned throughout the MBA coursework and propose a viable business venture in this country market.

Course Components

Pre-assignment – prior to departure, students are required to finish reading 10 sets of assigned academic journal articles and case analyses to gain the basic understanding of China.

Field Trip – participate fully in the 11-day field trip to China (cities include: Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, and Hong Kong)

Post-assignment – work in a group of 3 members, and submit a business venture plan to introduce a service or a product to the Chinese market, or to export a service or a product from China. (Detailed guidelines will be provided by the instructor).

Pre-requisite

Waiver or completion of MKTG 801/MKTG 500, with a grade of B or better.

Full admission to the MBA Program.

Doing business in Jordan & Egypt (with possible visit to Dubai)

Course Objectives

This 3 credit-hour MBA course is designed to help students: (1) keep abreast of the rapidly changing market conditions faced by countries in the middle east, especially, Jordan & Egypt in the global economy; (2) develop understanding and awareness about the many opportunities and challenges faced by businesses currently working with Jordan & Egypt; (3) apply the theoretical frameworks learned throughout the MBA coursework and propose a viable business venture in this country market.

Course Components

Doing Business in Korea & Japan

Course Objectives

Korea is a market of many opportunities for American companies of all sizes. In 2006, South Korea was America's seventh largest export market, sixth largest trading partner, fifth largest export market for agricultural products, and fifth largest market for high technology goods. South Korean imports of U.S. products and services exceed those of: France, Taiwan, the Netherlands, and Australia.

South Korea continues to be an economic leader in Asia and is the third largest economy in East Asia. Situated between China and Japan, South Korea is well integrated into both markets.

This 3 credit-hour MBA course is designed to help students:

1. keep abreast of the rapidly changing market conditions faced by Korea in the global economy;
2. develop understanding and awareness about the many opportunities and challenges faced by businesses currently working in Korea;
3. apply the theoretical framework learned throughout the MBA coursework and propose a viable business venture in this country market.

Course Components

1. Pre-assignment: Prior to departure, students are required to finish:
    reading a set of assigned academic journal articles and case analyses, to gain background understanding of Korea;
    learning to gain access to the database from the XU library and gathering critical secondary data about this country market
2. Field Trip Participate fully in the 10-day field trip to Korea
3. Post-Assignment Submit a business venture plan to introduce a service or a product to the Korean market (Detailed guidelines will be provided by the instructor)

Doing business in Israel

Friday, May 17 to Sunday, May 24

Course Objectives

Israel is one of the most important business centers in the world. It is a global leader in high tech. It is a leader in the burgeoning “greening” industry. And it is an entrepreneurial center for a wide variety of enterprises. There are several companies that function in both Cincinnati and Israel, and we will have an opportunity to visit with them on both sides of the ocean.

This 3 credit-hour MBA course is designed to help students: (1) keep abreast of the rapidly changing market conditions faced by Israel in the global economy; (2) develop an awareness of the centrality of Israel as a global economic power; (3) apply the theoretical frameworks learned throughout the MBA coursework to develop a business plan that would link an industry of your choice with Israel in a joint venture.

Course Components

1. Pre-assignment – prior to departure, students will be expected to attend two or three orientation sessions where practitioners and experts on doing business in Israel will bepresenting. In addition, there will be required readings about global business, Israel, and the challenges and opportunities of multinational business.

2. Field Trip – participate in the 11-day field trip to Israel (we will travel through much of Israel and are likely to stay in Jaffa, Nazareth, and Jerusalem.

3. Post-assignment – work with a group of fellow students to produce a paper that demonstrates a business plan where you can apply the principles and challenges of an industry to the opportunities available in Israel. This could include outsourcing, co-venturing, or an entrepreneurial activity based in Israel. In addition, you will be asked to respond to several questions based on themes developed during our trip.
