“Inspired by music and an amazing faculty.”
Like many talented musical souls, from Bach to Vivaldi, Dan Parsley followed his artistic passions to build a solid professional career at the same time. And Xavier provided him the stage. His major challenge these days— as a professional full-time director for three separate choruses and ensembles, plus completing a dual master’s degree in conducting and ethno-musicology—is how to find enough time to pursue all his muses.
Surprisingly, Dan’s first area of interest was not music, but pre-law. “Then I started taking music classes, realizing that is what I was excited to do when I got up every morning.” So what was it that turned an aspiring lawyer into an inspiring vocal performer and conductor? “It was the music classes and the amazing faculty.”
“The academic rigor of the courses and the overall comprehensive nature of the education you receive at Xavier really prepares you for a professional career in music.” Dan also credits the core curriculum with helping to guide his way. “It’s a very holistic view, not just focused on the music side of what I’m doing.”
Just bring your dreams, and talents; Xavier will help you take it to the top. “The music faculty takes a truly vested interest in their students in a way that really draws them in and helps them realize their passions.”
The Arts at Xavier
What is art? At Xavier, it's more than just paintings in a museum. It's the ability to tell a story. It's drama performed on the stage. It's poetry. It's the sound of music. In the 21st century world, it's also websites, blogs and tweets. We have a liberal view of the arts, which is fitting since, well, our history is as a liberal arts university.
Sure, we offer traditional art programs in all their forms - painting, ceramics, drawing, fibers, photography, sculpture. But art is more than just paint and clay here. We also offer art for the right side of the brain - art history and art education. What's more, students can audition for scholarships and grants in our music, art and performing arts programs.
The world changes with each new technology, but one thing remains constant - the importance of communication. It's the one tool that employers value most. Learn the skill and how to apply it to a variety of media: advertising, public relations, radio, TV, video and web
