Selective Admission Programs
Occupational Therapy Applicants
Admission to the Occupational Therapy (OT) Program is competitive. Applicants to the OT major will be admitted on a rolling basis to Xavier but not to the OT major – they will initially be admitted as undecided students. Students will be notified separately of their admission to OT. Students will receive two admission decisions; one for undergraduate admission to Xavier and one for the OT major. Selected students will be directly admitted to the OT major, but some applicants will be wait listed. Wait listed students will be admitted to Xavier University but not the OT major. Wait listed students will be notified as soon as possible, but no later than July 1, 2013 if they are admitted to the program. Applicants admitted to the Occupational Therapy Program and depositing on or before May 1, 2013 will have secured a spot in occupational therapy as a major.
Any student wishing to be considered for admission to the occupational therapy program must indicate occupational therapy as their major of choice on their application for admission and must apply by the February 1, 2013 application deadline. Students will be notified of their admission to the occupational therapy major during the last two weeks in February 2013.
Strong candidates for acceptance to the major will typically meet and/or exceed the criteria below. Please note that meeting the following criteria will make a student a strong candidate, but does not guarantee admission to the program:
- 3.0 or higher GPA (on a weighted 4.0 scale) AND
- 1100 or higher SAT** score or 24 or higher ACT score
- Completion of 40 required hours of volunteer/work experience documented on approved form (20 hours prior to acceptance; additional 20 hours prior to first day of classes)
- Contact with Department Occupational Therapy representative. The Department of Occupational Therapy will hold informational sessions throughout the summer and fall. Please check back for more information.
Students wishing to have their major changed to Occupational Therapy after being admitted to another major at Xavier must be considered for admission separately to the program and will be admitted to the program on a space available basis.
Additional details are available on the Occupational Therapy website.
Nursing Applicants
Admission to the School of Nursing is competitive. Applicants to Nursing will be admitted on a rolling basis to Xavier but not to the School of Nursing – they will initially be admitted as undecided students. Students will be notified separately of their admission to Nursing. Students will receive two admission decisions; one for undergraduate admission to Xavier and one for the nursing major. Selected students will be directly admitted to the School of Nursing, but some applicants will be wait listed. Wait listed students will be admitted to Xavier University but not the nursing program. Students will be notified of their admission to the School of Nursing during the last two weeks in January 2013.
Strong candidates for admission to the School of Nursing will typically meet and/or exceed the criteria below. Please note that meeting the following criteria will make a student a strong candidate, but does not guarantee admission to the program:
- 3.0 or higher GPA (on a weighted 4.0 scale) AND
- 1100 or higher SAT** score, including at least a 490 score on the math subsection OR 24 or higher ACT score, including at least a 21 score on the math subsection
In addition to academics, Xavier will consider all facets of a student’s application for admission to the University when considering candidates for the School of Nursing. A student’s essay, recommendation(s), resume, activities and awards, as well as other factors, will be considered.
In addition to a student’s application for admission, the Office of Admission will consider demonstrated interest in making admission decisions to nursing (campus visits, student initiated contact with Admission or the School of Nursing, etc). Academic criteria will not necessarily take priority – that is, many students will be admitted with lower grades and standardized test scores than other higher achieving students based on the Admission Review Committee’s determination of demonstrated interest and fit for the nursing program.
The School of Nursing will hold informational sessions throughout the summer and fall. Please check back for more information.
All tuition and housing deposits for students admitted to the School of Nursing are non-refundable.
Students wishing to have their major changed to nursing after being admitted to another major at Xavier must be considered for admission separately to the program and will be admitted to the program on a space available basis.

Applicants will be informed of their admission to the Music or Music Education major in their acceptance letter from the University.
**Please note that all SAT scores listed are out of a possible 1600. At this time, Xavier University does not take the SAT or ACT writing score into consideration.
