Academic Support

Xavier offers numerous support services to assist students in achieving their academic, career and personal development goals.

Academic Advising
All undergraduate students are assigned an academic advisor to provide assistance in developing educational plans and goals. Students with declared majors are advised by department chairs or designated faculty advisors in the departments. Undeclared students are assigned an academic advisor in the academic advising center, the Williams College of Business (undecided–business), or the center for adult and part-time students. Students meet with their advisors a minimum of twice a year.

Learning Assistance Center
The mission of Xavier's learning assistance center is threefold: ensuring students with disabilities can freely and actively participate in all facets of university life; providing and coordinating support services to maximize students' educational potential and develop their independence; and increasing the level of awareness among all members of the university community so that students with disabilities are able to perform at a level limited only by their abilities, not their disabilities.

Student Success and Retention
The office of student success and retention is the primary retention center at Xavier University. The director and assistant director offer a unique service as the advocates for all undergraduate students. By providing an ombudsman who aids students in solving problems, Xavier demonstrates its care and concern for the individual. At the office of student success and retention there is an emphasis on the freshman class and their social, personal and academic adjustment to college.

Writing Center
The James A. Glenn Writing Center provides assistance with all aspects of the writing process to all Xavier students, regardless of their level of ability or field of study. Undergraduate peer tutors, graduate tutors and the director serve as instructors. The center has a library of writing-related references and provides computers and printers for those who need a quiet place to write.

Math Tutoring
The math tutoring lab provides help for students in all undergraduate math courses. A faculty member, a graduate student and a few undergraduate math majors staff the lab. A tutor is available at all times the lab is open. Students also may use the lab as a study area. No appointments are necessary.
