This four-year scholarship is awarded annually to incoming first-year students who have demonstrated extraordinary leadership or initiative in the area of community engagement or service through their school, community or church, and who have shown high academic achievement. The Community-Engaged Fellows are involved in a host of diverse, hands-on community opportunities throughout the Cincinnati region drawing upon principles of social justice, community building and public policy. They are guided by faculty and community engagement professionals on campus and in the field.
For Fall 2015, the Community-Engaged Fellowship was valued at $22,000 per year and was awarded to eight incoming first-year students.
The Community-Engaged Fellowship is tuition restricted and supersedes any other scholarship/award offers.
Students who wish to compete for the Xavier Community-Engaged Fellowship must demonstrate the following characteristics: interest in social issues; passion for social justice; initiative in responding to community conditions; leadership in inspiring others to action; a collaborative work style; and a willingness to take risks in order to learn more. Typical recipients have at least a 3.0 GPA and an SAT of 1280 (29 ACT). Xavier University's Scholarship Committee, composed of faculty, administrators, and student leaders, selects the recipients of the Community Engaged Fellowships. Selected students will be interviewed on campus in the spring of the student's senior year.
