Mike Ford memorial
A memorial service for Mike Ford, a long-time political advisor and founding director of Xavier's Center for the Study of the American Dream, is being held on Sunday, Dec. 8, at noon in the Conaton Board Room in Schmidt Hall. Ford died on Nov. 5 after a lengthy illness. The service is sponsored by the Hamilton County Democratic Party, former Cincinnati Mayor Jerry Springer, the Center for the Study of the American Dream and other Ohio friends. Hall of Fame inductions
Xavier is inducting five new members into the Athletic Hall of Fame during the men's basketball game against BGSU at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7. The women's basketball game against Austin Peay at 7:00 p.m. completes the day's double-header. The induction takes place during halftime of the men's game. The Eigel Center for Community-Engaged Learning invites faculty academy participants for spring 2014 to a lunch-and-learn session and presentation by director Sean Rhiney on Monday, Dec. 9, from noon to 1:00 p.m. in the Faculty Lounge. The academy is an annual curricular development program focused on course redesign and creation using principles of community-engaged learning and scholarship. Inaugural Staff Forum
The newly formed Staff Advisory Committee encourages all Xavier staff to save the date for the inaugural Staff Forum on Tuesday, Dec. 10 from 1:30 - 2:30 p.m. in the Gallagher Student Center Theater.
The Center for Mission and Identity is collecting toys for the children of the neighboring Avondale community. Toys can be dropped off through Monday, Dec. 9, and at the holiday open house on Tuesday, Dec. 10, from noon to 1:30 p.m.
The Department of Music is holding a Christmas Ball on Friday, Dec. 13, from 7:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m. in the Conaton Board Room in Schmidt Hall. The ball, open to students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members, will have live music, dancing, refreshments, raffles, door prizes and a silent auction. Proceeds go to the music department's 2014 European Tour. Tickets are on sale through Friday from 10:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m. in the Gallagher Student Center or online for $12 per person or $20 per couple. To accommodate this week's meeting of the Xavier University Board of Trustees, select parking spaces are being reserved on campus on Thursday, Dec. 5, and Friday, Dec. 6. The spaces will be marked.
All Honors nominations
Nominate a student for recognition at the 2014 All Honors Day Student Leadership Assembly on Saturday, April 5, when student contributions made through leadership, service, advocacy and co-curricular involvement are recognized. Civil rights at Stowe House
History students from a class on Cincinnati and the Civil Rights Era are presenting their projects on riots, freeways, women, neighborhoods and the politics of respectability at the Harriet Beecher Stowe House on Saturday, Dec. 7, at 1:00 p.m. The event is free to the general public, but seating is limited. Antonio Johnson nominations
Nominations are being accepted for the 2014 Antonio Johnson Scholarship Award until Monday, Dec. 9, at 5:00 p.m. Any member of the Xavier community may nominate a student for the scholarship to be awarded at the annual gala on Friday, April 11. The program recognizes the contributions of students of African descent with a full-tuition scholarship for the senior year plus room, board and books. Nomination forms are accessible on OrgSync. Final grading open
Final grading is open for all fall semester classes. Grades should be submitted by Monday, Dec. 23, in order for the deans to determine academic standing. Submitted grades are typically posted to academic records by 9:00 a.m. each business day. Faculty may submit grades via "Enter Final Grades" from the Faculty Resources Tab on the MyXU portal.
Jane Leavy, mother of Mike Leavy, associate director of the Xavier Leadership Center, died Monday, Dec. 2. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Family Hospice and Palliative Care or the St. Vincent de Paul Society, c/o St. Bede Conference, 509 S. Dallas, Pittsburgh, Pa. 15208. Visitation is today, Thursday, Dec. 5. The funeral is Friday, Dec. 6, in Pittsburgh. Condolences may be sent to the Post-Gazette.
