What, if any, technology
fee is charged by the campus and what does it cover?
- Full-Time undergraduates are charged a $200 Instructional
Technology Fee per semester (the technology fee for part-time
students is included in per credit hour tuition costs). This fee
includes access to the available computer labs on campus and free
printing service on the networked laser printers in those labs, as
well as the Gallagher Student Center and the McDonald Memorial
Library computer facilities. Access to software packages, help
desk services and other technology support are also covered in
this semester fee. The technology fee also supports the continual
upgrade and maintenance of the University’s instructional

Are students required to purchase
their own computer?
- Xavier University does not require students to purchase their
own computers. Accessible computer labs are available to all
students. Internet and network access is provided for
student-owned computers. Wireless access is
available in McDonald Memorial Library, Gallagher Student Center, A.B. Cohen Center and green spaces of the academic and residential

How does the campus make computing
and network access financially available to all students?
- Xavier University ensures that students will have ample access
to computers and computer facilities by providing 210 computer
workstations that are accessible to all students. This includes 30
laptop wireless networked computers available through the
Gallagher Center and 44 wireless laptops available in the McDonald
Library. Students are able to complete their coursework and print
out their papers, assignments, etc. free of charge in the campus
computer labs and the library. [top]
- Access to the internet and the campus network is provided to
each student in the residence halls.
Does the campus assess extra fees
for network connections in the dorms or for off-campus access?
- - Residence hall students are charged a $70 Cable/Data Access
fee per semester. In addition to cable TV access, this fee
includes access to a network jack for each room occupant which
allows students access to the Xavier University network and

If I bring my own computer equipment
to school, what kind of support can I expect from the campus?
- Xavier University encourages and supports students who provide
their own personal computers. The Information Systems and Services
(ISS) department maintains an online registration
service for residential students who wish to access the XU
network with their personal computers.
- The ISS help desk also provides assistance for hardware and software issues.
- If students wish to access the wireless network currently
available on campus (Gallagher Center, A. B. Cohen Center,
McDonald Memorial Library, and green spaces of the Academic and
Residential Malls) via laptop computers they need to be in
compliance with the wireless network requirements and registered. More

as the planned expansion of the network is available via

What hardware and software
standards, if any, does the campus require, recommend, and/or
support?
- Students living in the Xavier University residence halls
should ensure that their computers meet the hardware standards in
order to have access to the Xavier University network. Information
regarding these standards is availableonline.

What kinds of services (help desk,
training, troubleshooting) are provided by the campus, and during
what hours of operation?
- The ISS help desk, located in the Campus Services Building, is
available 77 hours a week (Monday through Thursday 7:00 a.m. to
9:30 p.m.; Friday 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Saturday 7:00 a.m. to
4:00 p.m.) during the regular school semester and provides
assistance with hardware and software problems, login and account
issues, use of the MyXU portal system including the email and
calendaring system, network and internet access, and general
computing issues, including printing problems. Help is available
via telephone assistance by dialing extension 745-4357.
- The ITS
student technology desk, located in Alter Hall, room B-1, is
available 93 hours per week: (Monday through Thursday 8:00 a.m. to
12:00 a.m.; Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Saturday 8:00 a.m. to
5:00 p.m.; Sunday 1:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m.) during the regular
school semester and provides tutorial assistance with generic and
discipline-specific software applications, the Blackboard learning
management system, and the Group Studio and Course studio areas of
the MyXU portal. This desk also maintains the functionality of the
five open computing labs. Help is available via telephone
assistance by dialing extension 3557.
- Training workshops and online tutorials are available to all
members of the Xavier community including students. For more

Does the campus have a plan for
keeping the hardware current, and, if so, what is the replacement
cycle?
- Computer
workstations on campus are replaced on a basic four year cycle
in order to keep machines current for faculty, staff, and academic
departments. More information regarding the replacement schedule
for university machines is available online from the information

How does the campus support printing
for the students, and is there a charge for this?
- Networked laser printers are available in the various campus
labs, the library, and the Gallagher Student Center, and are
included in the student technology fee (no additional charge).
- If necessary, additional professional printing services are
available on campus through Xavier University document center
(operated by Kinko’s) located in the Gallagher Student Center.
