Consumer Guide to Technology at Xavier University

The use of technology continues to become an increasingly important component in our everyday lives. Advances in technology have made a significant impact on education, from the university curriculum to the ways in which class material is delivered and presented to students. To better ensure their success, students and their parents need to be informed regarding the resources available and the responsibilities given to them during their academic careers. Toward this end, Educause, a non-profit association dedicated to advancing higher education through the promotion of intelligent use of information technology, has developed a ‘Consumer Guide for Parents’ to assist in the process of evaluating technology resources on college campuses.

Xavier University is committed to providing students with the best available technology which, through direct interaction, enhances their learning experience and best prepares them to achieve their professional goals. To help students and their parents understand and navigate the available material, this consumer guide is divided into four basic components:

Academic Experience
Includes information about on-line resources for library research, communication and technology facilities available to Xavier students.

Administrative Experience
Includes information about administrative procedures that may be completed on-line including college admission, financial aid, and course registration.

Social Experience
Provides a description of Xavier’s ‘wired’ campus including the availability of technology, personal web pages, contact information for students, faculty, and academic departments as well as information about Xavier social organizations and social opportunities on campus. Additional information is provided regarding the rules and regulations for using the Xavier computer network.

Requirements, Services, and Costs
Includes information on technology fees and services as well as hardware requirements for networking personal computers.
