General Information
Xavier University’s Summer Honors Institute is a two-week, residential program that offers gifted high school students from Ohio the opportunity to take a course from Xavier’s strongest academic programs and earn three college credits.
The 2008 program will take place from July 5th - July 19th.
To participate, high school students must be Ohio residents who are classified as gifted and have completed their freshman or sophomore year. The cost to students is $500, which covers residential and extracurricular expenses. Tuition, book, and course field trip costs are paid for through a grant from the Ohio Department of Education.

- Popular Archaeology
- Cincinnati and the Underground Railroad
- Computation and the Information Age
- Justice in America: An Ohio Rendition
- Studies in Black Literature
Important Dates:
- April 11, 2008 - Applications, including applications for scholarship assistance and verification of gifted eligibility, are due
- April 25, 2008 - Accepted students are notified
- May 9, 2008 - Deadline by which students must confirm their attendance in the program. Attendance fee of $500 is due. If a student does not confirm attendance within two weeks of receiving notification of acceptance, his or her space may be given to another eligible student.
- June 2, 2008 - First cancellation deadline. Students canceling their enrollment by this date will be refunded $425 of the program fee.
- June 16, 2008 - Final cancellation deadline. Students canceling their enrollment by this date will be refunded $250 of the program fee.
- July 5, 2008 - Summer Honors Institute begins
- July 19, 2008 - Summer Honors Institute concludes
Sample Schedule (Monday - Friday):
- 8:45 am - 11:45 am: Class
- Noon - 1:00 pm: Lunch
- 1:15 pm - 3:15 pm: Class or field trip
- 3:30 pm: Free time / study time
- 5:30 pm: Dinner
- 7:00 pm: Free time / study time
- 9:00 pm: Residence Hall programs

Program Costs
The cost to students is $500, which covers residential and extracurricular expenses. Tuition, book, and course field trip costs are paid for through a grant from the Ohio Department of Education. Not included in the $500 are personal expenses, such as long distance phone calls or spending money during field trips and excursions.
A limited number of $500 scholarships will be distributed on the basis of financial need or minority status. Students wishing to request scholarship assistance must submit the scholarship application form along with their application. Scholarship applications will be considered in order of their submission, so students are encouraged to submit them as early as possible.
Residential Experience
Students will live on campus in a Xavier residence hall, eat on campus and have full access to all the recreational, educational and social amenities available to Xavier students. Students will also participate in extracurricular activities including trips to local attractions like Paramount's Kings Island, the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, and a Cincinnati Reds baseball game.
