Student Involvement

Emerging Leaders Programs

Emerging leaders programs aim to advance the leadership skills of Xavier's first and second-year students.  These programs include weekly sessions during the spring and fall semesters as well as an overnight retreat in January.  Emerging leaders programs are facilitated by upperclass student leaders and aim to help younger students enhance their skills, form connections with other Xavier leaders, and engage in discussion.

Emerging Leaders Initiative

Emerging Leaders Initiative is a weekly program for Emerging Leaders in the Xavier Community.  We will explore leadership styles, facilitation skills and group dynamics through team building initiatives and individual reflection.

All programs take place on Monday evenings at 7pm in Gallagher Student Center Room 330.

Emerging Leaders Retreat

This annual overnight leadership retreat is designed for first and second year students beginning their leadership development journey.  Clubs and organizations across campus designate two student representatives to attend.  It is a great opportunity for students to learn from their peers and develop their own leadership skills while also serving as a catalyst for self-discovery and relationship building.  A large portion of the retreat focuses on the concept of “team” and encourages students to build relationships with other future Xavier leaders.

Organizations select their student delegates in the fall semester and the retreat takes place the last weekend in January.  Nominations for the 2010 retreat are due December 2 @ 5:00 p.m.  The retreat will take place Friday, January 29 – Saturday, January 30, 2010.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Retreat

What are the benefits of participating?
The Emerging Leaders Retreat is a fantastic opportunity to hone your leadership skills, network with other students, and learn the steps to become a leader at Xavier. Many retreat graduates assume significant campus leaders roles.  See the list of some of our past participants.

What should I expect?
The retreat is a great opportunity to network with peers and learn a little something about yourself.  It includes a variety of team building activities, interactive workshops, and small group discussion.  Be prepared to share information about yourself and have fun getting to know other Xavier students.

What do I need to do before the retreat?
Before attending the retreat all participants must fill out the response form, complete the emergency contact form, and pay the retreat fee in full. Confirm with your sponsoring organization about fee and payment.

How much does is cost to attend?
The Emerging Leaders Retreat is $45/person.  This covers the cost of transportation to and from the retreat, all meals (dinner, breakfast, lunch, and a snack), and all supplies.

Who pays for the retreat?
Many offices and student organizations pay all or a portion of the retreat costs for their delegates.  Sometimes individuals pay all of the retreat costs on their own. Check with your sponsoring organization to see if they are able to help pay for the retreat.

What if I don’t have a sponsoring organization?
Peer Leadership Team welcomes emerging leaders who may not be connected with a specific club or organization.  If you are interested in attending the retreat, but are not affiliated with an organization, fill out a participant response form and please pay by cash or check.

How do we pay?
Offices and student organizations can complete an interdepartmental charge form.  The Peer Leadership Team will initiate the charge forms and send the necessary paperwork to the office or organization.  Students may also pay by check (made out to Xavier University).  Students can also use the Friedlander Fund to help cover the cost of the retreat.

What should I bring?
All participants will receive a pack list and final reminders at least two weeks prior to the retreat.  The pack list generally includes bedding (sleeping bag, blanket, pillow), toiletry items, towel, wash cloth, comfortable clothes, and optional items such as a camera or board games.

Where is the retreat?
The retreat generally takes place at an off-campus retreat location. This year, ELR will be held at Camp Kern.

How do I get to the retreat?
All participants are provided transportation to and from the retreat via bus.

What are the accommodations?
Participants are provided beds, bathrooms, and showers.  Male and female students sleep in separate areas.

When does the retreat take place?
The retreat is held January 29th- 30th, 3:00pm Friday to 4:00pm Saturday.

What if I have a class conflict on Friday?
We will do our best to help arrange transportation for students who need to arrive late.  Given the short length of time for the retreat, it is preferable that all participants can attend for the full length of time.

What if I get sick or can’t attend at the last minute?
Please call to notify us if you can no longer attend the retreat.  Unfortunately, we are not able to reimburse you for your retreat fees as we pay based on our expected number of participants.
