Sport management includes any combination of skills related to planning, organizing, directing, controlling, budgeting, leading and evaluating in an organization or department whose primary product or service is related to sport and/or physical activity.
The Xavier University sport management and marketing program prepares students to work in the sport industry. The sport industry includes (but is not limited to) intercollegiate athletics, professional sport teams, sport marketing and management firms, sport facility and event management and sport tourism. In addition, sport management majors may work in industries that support, or are adjacent to sport enterprises.
The sport industry is competitive and for students to succeed, it is necessary to network and build relationships in the industry while pursuing undergraduate education. To this end, our program seeks to maximize student contact with industry professionals and enhance understanding of the business of sport through rigorous academic preparation.
Xavier University is committed to a broad-based liberal education in the Jesuit tradition. The core curriculum endeavors to realize and embody Xavier's mission and philosophy of education and serves as the educational foundation for all undergraduate students. Beyond the core curriculum, sport management students must successfully complete 71 semester hours of required courses. Sport marketing students must complete 77 semester hours. The additional hours required for sport marketing majors reflect an emphasis on the sub-discipline of marketing.
