SOPHOMORE DISCERNMENT DINNERS |

We invite sophomores to join us for help discerning and exploring options for a major, career path and how you choose to make a difference in the world. We will gather for three evenings in the fall semester (once a week) to explore the following questions: What are my gifts, strengths and passions? What are the world's needs? How do my gifts match up with the world's needs? Sophomore Discernment Dinners will be held on Oct. 29, Nov. 5 and Nov. 12. Sign ups are required for this program and space is limited. If you are interested in this program, you must sign up by Oct. 16.

Whether you are exploring majors and careers or are uncertain of your future plans, the "Careers in..." series has something for you. Professionals representing a variety of careers within each "Careers in..." topic will share information about potential career options and tips for securing internships and full time jobs. "Careers in..." offers a relaxed atmosphere to explore new career options, seek advice and build your professional network. Each session will begin with a panel discussion, which will be opened up for student Q&A, and will conclude with networking and refreshments to allow students and panelists to connect one on one. |

Want to get off campus and check out the food and fun in Cincinnati? Then the Mystery Bus Trip is for you. This program offers sophomores the opportunity to go to an undisclosed location and enjoy some of the food and fun of Cincinnati. The first Mystery Bus Trip will be held on Thursday, Oct. 15, from 6:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m. There is no cost for this program but space is limited.
Here is your clue about this trip: This trip isn't for the faint of heart.

MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR ADVISOR |

With spring priority registration just around the corner (Nov. 9-13), many of you will be scheduling appointments to meet with your advisor to discuss spring semester scheduling. Your relationship with your advisor is one of the most important ones you will form while at Xavier. An advisor is knowledgeable about academic policies and programs, and resources that can help you make the most of your educational experience. |
Here are a few suggestions for making the best use of the time and expertise of your advisor.

| 1. |
Make and keep your appointment with your advisor. If an emergency comes up and you need to reschedule or you are running late, make it a point to call or e-mail your advisor to let him or her know. You never know when you might need a letter of recommendation, so it is important to make a good impression. You may find the name of the advisor assigned to you by going to the student services tab on the portal and under student records select view student information. Also, keep in mind that there are peak times of the year when advising gets very busy, so don't wait until the last minute to schedule an appointment. |

Advisors are the best resource for teaching you about the core curriculum and your major. To prepare for this appointment, print out and review a copy of your degree evaluation. By reviewing this in advance of your appointment, you will be prepared to ask your advisor about courses and opportunities that will complement your academic experience. You may run a degree evaluation by going to the student services tab on the portal and under student records select view/run degree evaluation. |

Be prepared to collaborate with your advisor and to accept responsibility for your decisions and for following the recommendations that you and your advisor agree upon. |

Keep in mind that advisors are an excellent sources of information about campus resources and opportunities related to your major.
