Fieldwork
To be an effective beginning practitioner, the student must acquire knowledge of social work theory and develop his or her skills as a practitioner under professional supervision. The social work student invests over 50 credit hours in related classroom courses and 480 clock hours (8 credit hours) in the field actually doing social work.
In order to complete this course of study, the student devotes nearly the entire third and fourth years of study to social work classes, field instruction, and supporting core courses in the social sciences.
It is during the last year that students may pursue their specific interest through their choice of field instruction. Usually under the supervision of a M.S.W. (Master's Level) social worker, students (with departmental supervision) are placed in a social service agency. Students have interned at Catholic Social Services, the Children's Home, and Women Helping Women, to name a few.
