Xavier Programs
For many years now, the University has provided professional counseling services and psychotherapeutic treatment to all students, including students impacted by sexual harassment, at no charge.
Xavier has taken a variety of proactive steps over the years to assist in the prevention, response and awareness of sexual harassment.
- In 2003, Xavier established the Advocate program to provide assistance to those interested in privately discussing issues around sexual harassment.
- In 2006, the Harassment Code and Accountability Procedures were established.
- In the summer of 2008, Xavier Students Against Sexual Assault (XSASA) was formed. This student group empowers students, faculty and staff to prevent rape and sexual assault.
- Starting in 2009, all first year students have been required to attend a workshop on the “hook-up” culture. The purpose of this event is to offer first year students a dose of reality about casual sexual relations and invite them into a conversation about discerning what they really desire in regard to sexuality and relationships during college.
- In 2009 and 2011, Xavier’s Women’s Center hosted a conference on Gender-Based Violence.
- Additionally, Xavier’s Women’s Center partnered with the Green Dot program. The purpose of this program is to implement a strategy for preventing violence that consistently, measurably reduces power-based personal aggression, including sexual assault.
- Recently, Xavier also enhanced a wellness program aimed at changing students’ knowledge, attitudes and behavioral intentions regarding alcohol and other drug consumption, which often play a role in incidents of sexual harassment.
- In 2010, an ad hoc committee reviewed the Xavier Student Handbook with respect to sexual harassment, and developed a set of relevant definitions and benchmark sanctions to be used when there is a finding of responsibility. These changes were incorporated into the Student Handbook in August 2010.
