Dear Xavier Resident Students: My name is Scott Smith and I am the president of Xavier's Resident Student Association. RSA is a student run organization that strives to improve the living conditions within the residence halls and apartments on campus. Our job is to not only to plan community-oriented programs within each hall, but to listen to the concerns of each resident. We take each issue and address them in a student government setting. To accomplish this, we have a five person elected council for each of the four residence halls and one for the collective apartments. These councils meet once weekly as a group and with the other four councils weekly in a general assembly. As a group, each council is allotted a budget for each semester to plan programs within their hall. Some programs from last year included a Midwinter Luau in Husman and a comedy festival in Brockman. In addition to programming, councils are asked to take concerns from the residents and use their budgeted money for the good of the community including such things as improved recreation equipment (i.e. pool cues and balls). We ask that non-elected wing delegates and RAs to attend the weekly meetings as well so we can achieve stronger communication within each halls community. Some issues we have changed recently have been to include more diverse programming on campus cable and placing a crosswalk on Dana Ave. for the students living in the Village. I strongly encourage you to look over our application for your hall council found on the website. We ask that applications be sent in by Monday September 12, as elections will be held in the Hoff Dining Center Thursday and Friday September 15-16. Applications may be turned into out mailbox in the SGA offices on the second floor of Gallagher Student center or many be sent to my email smithsm1@xu.edu. All students who turn one in will be notified immediately so they may begin campaigning. There will also be an informational meeting in the lobby of each residence hall on the week September 5-9 where any further questions can be asked. RSA is a great start for leadership opportunities at Xavier; many of our members move on to become RAs, and I personally am captain of the Club Baseball team in addition to RSA. If you do not choose to run for council, I am interested to hear your input as to ways your hall could be improved once you settle into life at Xavier. Feel free at anytime to email me or stop by my room in the Commons. New this year is a plan for a town hall meeting between students, RSA and the office of residence life to address concerns and questions. As well, keep an eye out for postings as to RSA council and general meeting times, all are welcome. Best wishes for a great school year. Scott Smith
