Resident Student Association
President's Report to Senate - October 8, 2001

1)    Housing Selection Process

Housing selection for upperclass students has been moved to February. Residence Life will be releasing details within a week.

2)      Cable System

Cable listings are available on various web sites including Yahoo! TV. A direct link is on the RSA web site.

Oct 1st Report from Beverly Bobbitt, Assistant Director for Residence Life.

If a channel goes off line and displays "insert data access" it initially is a software problem. Physical plant has a designated person who can go punch up the number and insert the card to get us back on line. However, if a channel continues to go off line for example, ESPN Classic, it was a hardware problem and required TCI maintenance tech to work on the system. We have lost 4 channels at one time last week and all were put back on the air but we continue to have problems with Comedy Central. A repair tech is scheduled to come out to check the equipment.

A few residents are experiencing reception issues images (lines in the reception & double images). Primarily it's the shielding and modulators on the individual's TV as we are located directly across street from the dish  (overtly strong signal), which supplies the whole campus. This has been the issues with the TVs the provider has checked.

3)      The Commons

Oct 1st Report from Beverly Bobbitt, Assistant Director for Residence Life.

Commons has experienced no major problem except the hot water went out this weekend but it back on. Peepholes have been installed on all the apartment doors and new screws were also installed in the desk keyboard tray as we experienced a few problems with them over the last couple of weeks. We were trying to be proactive after a couple of problems with the trays.

4)      Honor’s program

Oct 5th Report from Ava Jean Fiebig, Director for Residence Life.

The honors program will continue to house the honor's center in the basement of Buenger and hold classes in the seminar rooms and the chapel in Buenger.  Honor's first year and sophomore students will continue to be housed in Buenger Hall and this number will probably increase.

Some honors students are interested in theme houses for next year.  They are welcome to apply and the theme house committee will select groups based on their application.  I cannot know if a men's and women's honors house for juniors and seniors will be approved.  It is less likely that a house of sophomore's would be approved.

The Villa (3870 VP) will be used for the honor's program for a combination of housing, offices, programming and seminars beginning June 1, 2002.  I do not know how many beds this will be or if the students will be upperclass or sophomores.

I do not expect clarification on anything else until later in the semester or January.

5)      Computer network

Report from http://www.xu.edu/rsa/business/

6)      Representative Elections

The elections process is complete. Positions still open will be filled through appointment by each council. Apartments and Houses council did not have anyone apply, so the positions will be appointed by the Executive.

7)      Singled Out

We held Singled Out last Tuesday (October 2). Attendance was about 20-30 people, but everyone appeared to enjoy themselves. Our next major event will be coupled with the Gospel Choir concert on December 8. Right now the event is expected to be our annual Bingo.

8)      Meetings

General meetings will be Wednesdays at 7:00 pm in the Buenger Chapel on the following dates:
