Background
As part of their program, University scholars program has two arrangements with
the office of residence life in regards to University operated housing. First,
the program has a "Honor's House" where honor's students can gather,
faculty can conduct class, and the program can full control. Second, students
within the program have priority housing in Buenger Hall for freshman and
sophomores. Each suite in Buenger designated for the program must have at least
50% University Scholars upon going through the housing selected process.
Goal
Agree on a situation with the office of residence life and University
scholars program that meets the needs of the program, allows for continued
efficient operation by the office of residence life, and satisfies the desires
of all residents.
Plans for 2002-2003
Honor's housing will be in the 2nd and 3rd floors of Buenger Hall. Freshman and
sophomores suites will be mixed within male and female wings on both floors.
Freshmen choosing to live in honor's housing will be forced to have random
roommates.
The Honor's Program will be using the Villa (3870 Victory Pkwy) for their house and housing for six junior and senior honor's students. Selection of those students will be the responsibility of the Honor's Program.
Current Status
University scholars currently has suites for priority housing in Buenger
Hall. If a student drops out of the program during the course of an academic
year, the student is not removed from the suite if it drops below the required
50% University Scholars.
Buenger Hall facilities are handled as such:
The program is guaranteed both the basement of Buenger and the Villa (3870 Victory Parkway) for their exclusive use upon the conclusion of the 2002 spring semester.
History
2000-2001 Academic Year
Buenger Hall Council conducted a forum with Ava Jean Fiebig (Director of Residence Life), Lorri Howell (Buenger Hall Director), Dr. Paul E. Collela (Director of Honors Program), Fr. John LaRocca, S.J. (Director of HAB Scholars), and two Buenger students on a panel to discuss the issues. As a result, the Buenger Kitchen was made available to non-honors residents during set hours. Residents would give an RA their all-card to gain access and were expected to leave the space clean after they were finished. This solution lasted until the end of the 2000-2001 academic year.
