About the residential housing campus network
(ResNet) and obtaining an Internet connection once on campus at Xavier:
Xavier provides
one network jack for each person in the residence halls, which is capable of
high speed network and Internet connectivity. This jack allows students
to access the MYXU portal, on-campus servers, their e-mail accounts, the
Internet, etc. All network jacks in the student rooms are active.
However, to gain access to the network, you will need to obtain a network
cable and to register your computer. Network cables can
be purchased at our Xavier Bookstore. You will be prompted to register your computer when you first
access a web browser when connected to the campus network.
Before you can register, you will need your portal
user name and password (Click here for
instructions to obtain this). You will also need to:
- Have an anti-virus program installed and running with up to date
AV definitions. If you do not have anti-virus software, Clean Access
will prompt you to install Xavier's copy of McAfee anti-virus.
(Note: If you already have virus scanning software, please uninstall
it first)
- Have all relevant security patches and updates installed, and have
Auto-Update turned on. Windows users must visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com (or, from Internet Explorer click Tools > Windows Update) and
download all software updates. After rebooting, you should visit
this site again to verify that there are no more patches to install
(some depend on the installation of a prior patch, and will not
appear as a download option until after the reboot). Windows XP
users must have installed Service Pack 2 or later!
- Have installed Microsoft's Anti-Spyware product (Optional, Windows
users)
If you do NOT met these conditions prior
connecting to the network,
your network connection will only be able to connect to software
update sites until you have finished updating your computer.
Instructions for configuration are also available via the web.
This portion of
the ResNet web site provides information on connecting a system during
the 2006/2007 Academic Year, including:
