JAPN101 ELEMENTARY JAPANESE I (3.00) An introduction to basic language skills such as reading and writing hiragana, katakana, and about 30 kanjii. Emphasizes the acquisition of high-frequency vocabulary and practical conversation.

JAPN102 ELEMENTARY JAPANESE II (3.00) The second semester elementary course which is a continuation of JAPN 101. Emphasizes listening and situational conversation. Prerequisite: JAPN 101 or equivalent

JAPN201 INTERMEDIATE JAPANESE I (3.00) The first semester intermediate course which is a continuation of JAPN 102 with a particular emphasis on the development of more creative use of the language and culture. Prerequisite: JAPN 102 or equivalent

JAPN202 INTERMEDIATE JAPANESE II (3.00) A communicative-oriented course integrating the skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking situational, functional Japanese through the study of authentic materials. The course includes a comprehensive grammar review. Prerequisite: JAPN 201 or equivalent

JAPN300 ADVANCED JAPANESE I (3.00) An upper-division course that is a continuation of JAPN 202. Its goal is to develop the basic language skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing and cultural understanding along with an intensive study of grammar. Prerequisite: JAPN 202

JAPN301 ADVANCED JAPANESE II (3.00) A language development course which emphasizes listening, speaking, reading, writing and cultural aspects with development of advanced structures. Prerequisite: JAPN 202 and permission of instructor
