Mission Statement

Xavier University Club Tennis will provide an enjoyable and competitive way for Xavier students to play tennis with other students, as well as other competing schools. This club is intended to be much less time consuming than a varsity tennis program would be. Its aim is to include all Xavier students, regardless of race, color, creed, national origin, ancestry, sex, disability, religious or political affiliation, or sexual orientation in order to uphold the Jesuit tradition.

Purpose

The purpose of the Club Tennis Team is to provide a method for students at Xavier to enjoy the great game of tennis that they all love. Avid and sporadic players alike are welcome to join and compete in whatever way they like, as the club has matches against other schools in the surrounding area. It is a less time consuming way for everyone to indulge in the sport, usually having practice only once or twice per week.

History and Accomplishments

The Club Tennis Team has been in existence for two years, having been created in October of 2006.  The United States Tennis Association (USTA) helped fund our organization for the first year to aid us in getting onto our feet and establishing a presence on campus, which we have certainly worked hard at doing. In our first few semesters as a team, we played matches against schools like Ohio State, Cincinnati, Kentucky, Miami (OH), Ohio, Louisville, Dayton, and Western Kentucky. A number of members have also made the annual trip to Madison, Wisconsin for the Midwest Campus Championships. This tournament is held at Nielsen Tennis Stadium at the University of Wisconsin and hosted about 20 different schools from the Midwest. In this high-intensity tournament, Xavier has played matches against Michigan, Michigan State, Butler, Miami (OH), Marquette, and Chicago-Loyola.

We've also played the role of hose during our time in the Midwest Conference. We've hosted matches at Xavier's very own tennis courts located below the Cintas parking lots by the intramural fields. On numerous occasions our venue and our role as host has been complimented by the schools we compete against, as they love the campus and the atmosphere when they play at XU. Also, during the 2007-08 year we held an open tennis clinic to anyone interested in order to teach the fundamentals to those who were just beginning to play. Club Tennis is a fun and fulfilling way to get outside, exercise, and meet the friendliest people on campus!

The USTA

As mentioned above, Xavier is part of the USTA along with many other schools in the Midwest. Each semester, the USTA completes the favor of scheduling matches between all of these teams, which is how Xavier is matched up with its opponents. If it weren’t for the USTA, Xavier would not have a competitive Club Tennis Team.
