Our department is composed of many areas: the O'Connor Sports Intramurals, Club Sports, Recreational Leagues, Fitness Training and Facilities, and Outdoor Adventures. To get you started, below are some important points of information regarding our various Recreational Sport offerings.
Our goal is to provide the Xavier community with the finest programs, services, facilities, and equipment in an effort to enhance the co-curricular learning opportunity and to foster a lifetime appreciation of individual growth for the whole person; (body-mind-spirit).
- Facilitate a living learning lab experience for leadership development, by fostering an integrated learning climate, which will enhance the students understanding of the benefits related to an educational setting outside the classroom.
- Work collaboratively to create an educational environment which motivates and inspires student learning and personal development.
- Student focused integrated learning through avenues of Employment, Sports Club involvement, Intramural Sports participation and Fitness Instruction.
- 70% of first year students participate in Intramurals, Club Sports, and Fitness.
The Xavier University Intramural Sports program (XUIM) exists to provide the Xavier community with structured, on-campus recreational competitions in a fun and safe environment. The Intramural Sports program employees 20 undergraduate students as well as one Graduate Intern. These students work as Scorekeepers, Officials, Sport Coordinators, and Managers.
Throughout the year, the XUIM program focuses on several primary sports:
- Flag Football
- Floor Hockey
- Indoor Soccer
- Indoor Volleyball
- Outdoor Soccer
- Sand Volleyball
Additionally, XUIM will host various special events:
- Basketball Competitions: Dunk Contests, 3 Point Shootout, and a Dribble Course
- 1 vs 1, 2 vs 2, and 3 vs 3 Basketball Tournaments
- IM 5k Run/Walk
- Innertube Water Polo
- Kickball, Tennis, and Racquetball Tournaments
The Xavier University Recreational Sports Department is responsible for all sport, recreational, and athletic venues on campus (excluding only the Cintas Center). The Recreational Sports Department schedules over 11,000 hours of programming each year. The facilities are utilized by club sports, intramural sports, fitness, student groups, XU Athletics, and rental groups. Recreational Sports is also responsible for facility operations of over 40 soccer matches, 25 baseball games, and several special events each year.

The Xavier Fitness program incorporates group exercise classes and Personal Training. The group exercise program is open to all students and runs throughout the academic year. Students are offered various class options that cover a wide range of fitness trends and popular programs. These classes are assisting the students with stress relief, as well as creating healthy life habits. Body, Mind and Spirit equal Total Development.
Class options vary from year to year and include classes like the following:
- Total Body Sculpting
- Water Aerobics
The Personal Training program was developed two years ago in conjunction with the Student Government Association to provide Xavier University students with certified personal trainers at an affordable rate. The personal trainers are students in our Sports Management program that are participating in an internship. They are certified through the American Council on Exercise (ACE).
The Club Sports program is designed to serve the interests of Xavier University by providing opportunities for Xavier University students, faculty and staff to continue participating or learn a new sport/recreational activity. While Club Sports fall on a competitive level between intramurals and intercollegiate athletics, the member's involvement in the Clubs is structured to be a learning experience for the members through their involvement in the organization and administration of club activities as well as the development of sports skills.
- There are 26 active sport clubs totaling over 660 members.
- Clubs members maintain 6-10 hours a week of practice and competition.
- Clubs performed over 2300 hours of service to the community last year.
- Clubs must fundraise and charge membership dues to subsidize the budget provided by the university. In 2010-11 the Club Sports program received a budget of $130,000 and teams fundraised over 160,000 resulting in over $296,000 available for club use.
- All of clubs are required to have a coach.
- The teams compete against other club teams from universities throughout the Midwest such as Indiana University, University of Kentucky, Ohio State University, Miami of Ohio and the University of Cincinnati.
- Participation in the Club Sports program is an excellent way to develop leadership skills, meet new friends with similar interests, stay in shape and enhance athletic skills.
