Pre-Professional
Programs
For students interesting in attending professional schools after the completion of their undergraduate degrees, Xavier provides a number of programs and advising services. Information about these services is available from the center for academic advising and the center for career and leadership development. Of particular note are the following support
services:
Pre-Professional Health Advising
The office of
pre-professional health advises students, provides support to the
student pre-med society, organizes student group visits to medical
schools, and holds mock medical school interviews and mock MCAT
test sessions.
The health sciences committee is available to discuss the diverse career options in the health professions and to help students over the many hurdles in preparation for, and application to, professional programs in the health sciences such as schools of medicine, dentistry, osteopathic medicine, podiatric medicine, veterinary medicine and optometry. Students who are interested in these careers should meet at least once a semester with the coordinator of pre-professional health advising. Both the coordinator and members of the committee are available for counseling in matters pertaining to career choices, admissions to professional schools and academic programs in the health sciences.

Pre-Law
American law
schools prescribe neither specific courses nor a specific major
for pre-law study. They pay particular attention to students engaged
in broad program of high quality in the liberal arts. The degree
program should educate the student to assimilate difficult documents
and to interpret factual data, to think logically and creatively,
to express themselves well orally and in writing, and to acquire
a critical understanding of the human institutions and values with
which the law deals.
The basic criteria
for acceptance to law school are the grade point average acquired
during undergraduate studies and performance on the Law School Admission
Test (LSAT). Students interested in the field of law should consult
both their departmental advisor and the pre-law advisor.
