20th Annual Shantytown at Xavier
For the 20th year in a row, a shantytown will spring up on the Academic Mall at Xavier University to educate people about the struggle of homeless veterans. Xavier University Shantytown 2008 begins at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 18 when students begin building cardboard shanties where they will stay for several days. The event ends at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, October 23.
The event will also raise money for the Drop Inn Center through Shantytown T-shirt sales.
Students sponsor and build shanties for $30, which they will live in for the five-day experience of solidarity with the homeless. The theme this year is homelessness in the young adult population (age 18-24). Through discussions after a skit and movie, the group hopes to educate people about the causes of homelessness in this population, what services are offered in our area, and what everyone can do to help. Students can also participate by purchasing t-shirts that support the cause.
As Greater Cincinnati's largest homeless shelter, the Drop Inn Center offers the essentials – housing, help, hope – to people experiencing homelessness. We provide a refuge of unconditional care and compassionate assistance for both men and women – reaching out our hand to encourage and empower those without resources to move from homelessness and destitution to shelter and stability.
