Xavier Receives $100,000 Gift from McGrath Estate

Xavier University has received a $100,000 gift from the estate of Mrs. Wilma McGrath.
Mrs. McGrath worked as a registered nurse at Xavier’s Health and Counseling Center for many years. The McGrath Health and Counseling center was named for her and her husband, the late Dr. Edward J. McGrath, who also worked at the Center and was a cardiothoracic surgeon and associate dean of the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Mrs. McGrath passed away earlier this year at the age of 90.
In the late 1960s, the Health Center was located on the first floor of the then newly-constructed Kuhlman Hall. In 1998 the center moved to its current location on Cleneay Avenue.
“Mrs. McGrath ran the health center in a very professional and disciplined manner, but cared a great deal about the students,” said Dr. James Konerman, McGrath Health Center Medical Director. “Over the last 10 years as I cared for her, she frequently asked about the Health Center. She continued her caring by donating a large amount of money to aid our future improvements.”
As part of a campus expansion, Xavier is working to develop Xavier Square, a 20-acre site on the corner of Dana Avenue and Montgomery Road. Part of the development will include a new McGrath Health and Counseling Center. The Square will also feature a mix of retail and entertainment outlets, office space, student housing, a hotel, a fitness center and the University bookstore.
