PRESENTATIONS AND EXHIBITS

 

Kam Wong, PhD, chair of Xavier’s Criminal Justice Department, made the following presentations:

 

  • Chair, “Panel: Crime and Justice in Cambodia, China, and North Korea,” Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, 45th Annual Meeting, Cincinnati, Ohio, March 12, 2008.

Xavier’s Military Science Department hosted a luncheon for Greater Cincinnati public high school principals and guidance counselors on April 10. Admission officers from Xavier, Miami of Ohio, and Northern Kentucky University also participated. Representatives from more than fifteen different high schools attended.  
 

Bill O'Connell, PhD, Associate Professor in the Department of School and Community Counseling, co-presented with Dr. Mei Tang from the University of Cincinnati at the American Counseling Association International Conference on March 30, 2008 in Honolulu, Hawaii. The title of the presentation was the "Mosaic of Counseling: Integrating Indigenous Healing and Ecological Counseling." Dr. O'Connell discussed the indigenous healing practices of persons native to Nayarit, Mexico. He has also previously contributed a book chapter to the edited text "Ecological Counseling: An Innovative Approach to Conceptualizing Person-Environment Interaction" published by the American Counseling Association.

 

The Ninth Annual Xavier University Army ROTC Best Ranger Competition was held on April 12.  Twelve ROTC universities from three states including Ohio, Indiana, and Tennessee fielded thirty-two teams.   The competition is comprised of two-person teams competing head-to-head in different physically and mentally grueling events.  The schedule of events included a physical fitness test, one rope bridge and land navigation, hand grenade assault course, M16A2 rifle weapons qualification, weapons disassembly and assembly, and 10 kilometer speed rucksack run.  Sophomore Eric Showman and freshman Justin Hilderbrand were champions in the rucksack run. LTC Pat Hampton is the commanding officer of the Xavier ROTC.

 

Luther Smith, Dean of Students and Kathleen Simons, Associate Provost for Student Life, presented at the ACPA Conference March 28-April 1 in Washington D.C. They spoke about “Controversial Speakers and Events: Strategies for Risk Management.” Fundamental to promoting free speech and academic freedom on the college or university campus is providing opportunities for students to become aware and knowledgeable about topics and issues that broaden their perspectives.  They guided conference participants through a process to reduce the risk of overt, disruptive behaviors prior to, during, and immediately following a presentation by a controversial speaker. 

 

Christian End, PhD, Assistant Professor of Psychology, was one of two faculty chaperones who accompanied seven undergraduate psychology students presented at the National Conference of Undergraduate Research April 10-12 in Salisbury, MD.

 

Xavier’s Division of Information Resources had a strong presence at the annual Summit conference for SunGard Higher Ed software (Banner) users, held April 13-17 in Anaheim, California. The conference drew over 8500 attendees from 1200 SunGard client institutions from across the nation and Canada. These four IR colleagues presented sessions showing Xavier as a "national model for excellence" when utilizing the SunGard products. Allen Cole, Registrar, presented a demo session showing how the Degree Evaluation at Xavier displays the requirement areas for faculty/advisors and students using the self-service access from the campus portal. Cole also serves on the SunGard Advisory Board for the CAPP Degree Evaluation software product contained within the Banner Student module. Doug Riga, DBA/Portal Administrator, presented 4 sessions on topics covering the structure of the portal's database, data integration between Banner and learning systems, and how-to redesign the look & feel of the portal. Doug Ruschman, Director of Web Services, presented on Xavier's Web 2.0 efforts, and hosted a panel session, titled "Peek-a-Portal 2", where four universities discussed features of their campus portals and fielded audience questions. Laura Ruwe, Assistant Registrar, presented a session titled "Collect Data for Campus Alerts in SSB" and served as a panel member for Doug Ruschman's portal session.

 

AWARDS AND HONORS

 

Cathy Springfield, Director of Performing Arts, was one of three theatre scholarship judges of The Overture Awards Finals Competition and Awards Ceremony held April 6, 2008 at the Aronoff Center’s Jarson-Kaplan Theater.

 

Marianne Borgmann, Interim Director of Admission at Xavier, was one of five community leaders who served as judges for the Lazarus Awards of the American Jewish Committee. Judges selected the winners and finalists and presented them with books and bonds from AJC at the ceremony. 

 

Kam Wong, PhD, chair of the Department of Criminal Justice, was selected as a special issue editor for Police Practice and Research: An International Journal (2007 – 08). In addition, he has been appointed to three editorial boards: Open Law Journal, Open Sociology Journal and the Asian – Pacific Journal of Police and Criminal Justice, and as an Editor-in-Chief to IPES working paper series.

 

Margo Heydt, PhD, Associate Professor of Social Work, was invited to attend the 20th anniversary session of the Oxford Round Table at Oxford University in England in March. Her presentation topic was “Substance Abuse and Sexual Child Abuse: Intersections in Treatment and Training.”

 

Kam Wong, PhD, chair of the Department of Criminal Justice, is on the organizing committee of International Police Executive Symposium for its 15th Annual Conference to be held on May 12-16, 2008 in Cincinnati.

 

Mike Nelson, PhD, Professor of Psychology, received the 2008 ABPP Distinguished Service and Contribution to the American Board of Professional Psychology Award to be presented at APA in Boston in August 2008.

 

Kam Wong, PhD, chair of the Department of Criminal Justice, was invited and awarded travel grants to present in Serbia, Hong Kong, China, and Yugoslavia.

 

Tom Hayes, PhD, Professor of Marketing, received the Crystal Apple from the Council to Advancement and Support of Education for being “a stellar speaker” at 10 separate conferences.

 

Stephanie Mosier, Assistant Director of Xavier’s Learning Assistance Center, was named Supervisor of the Year. She supervises all student tutors within that office. Her student nominator said, “I have never felt like I could not approach Stephanie when I have questions or concerns. Her availability and the fact that she goes out of her way to help other students (whether it is LAC employees/tutors or Xavier students) without hesitation is something I truly admire."

 

Bill O’Connell, PhD, Associate Professor in the Department of School and Community Counseling, will become President of the Ohio Counseling Association July 1, 2008.  He met with the First Lady of Ohio Francis Strickland and the Governor. 

 

PUBLICATIONS

 

José María Mantero, Associate Professor of Spanish at Xavier, has published Latinos and the U.S. South. Many cities and towns are unaccustomed to large numbers of foreign nationals in their area. The book offers a window into how Latinos are adapting to an emblematic yet often overlooked region of the United States and the possible parallels between the two.
