Xavier Receives Additional Grant of $50,000 from the H.B., E.W. and F.R. Luther Ch Foundation

Provides scholarships for students

Xavier University has received $50,000 from The H.B., E.W. and F.R. Luther Charitable Foundation, Fifth Third Bank and Narley L. Haley, Co-Trustees, to increase the endowed scholarship fund established by the foundation in 2002.

 

In 2002, the Foundation established a $25,000 endowed scholarship fund and added another $25,000 to it in 2005.  The Luther Foundation Scholarship has been awarded to one student each year.  Xavier will use the additional funding to award a larger scholarship or to assist more than one student. 

 

Xavier has a rich history in the arts.  Xavier’s music department recently received accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM).  It offers two undergraduate degree programs:  the Bachelor of Arts degree in music with a concentration in performance, in theory or history, and the Bachelor of Science degree in music education.  Both emphasize a broad coverage of the field of music and reflect Xavier's philosophy of combining a strong liberal arts core with a major area of study.  Xavier considers music an integral part of a liberal arts education.  The program engages students in many aspects of music, including the theoretical concepts of sound, the historical perspective, aesthetics and the performance of music.  Through a recent, grant-funded initiative, Xavier's music department strengthened its music education program and is becoming centered in outreach.  A visiting faculty member with expertise in music education was hired in 2007.  In addition to contributing new expertise to the department, she is also responsible for organizing efforts that involve Xavier students in music outreach at local and regional schools that have little access to music education. 

 

This grant addresses a top priority identified in Xavier’s strategic plan and $200 million capital campaign, To See Great Wonders, launched in September 2006 to commemorate the 175^th anniversary of the University:  growing the endowment.  A campaign priority is to increase endowed scholarship support in order to guarantee that access to a Xavier education will remain available for all admitted students into perpetuity.
