03/26/08
Xavier University’s South Asian Society (SAS) is hosting the third annual Midwest Masala, a South Asian dance competition on Saturday, April 5 at 5:30 p.m. in the Xavier’s Cintas Center main floor. Everyone is invited. Presale tickets are $10, or $12 at the door. For presale tickets, email southasiansoc@xavier.edu.
The admission fee includes a full Indian dinner which will be served at 5:30 on the concourse plaza of the Cintas Center.
All proceeds will be donated to the Saraswati Secondary School located in Nepal to help build a better library and provide technology for the students. Saraswati provides an education to youth who would not otherwise have the chance to go to school.
This dance competition begins at 7:00 pm and combines aspects of both traditional Eastern and modern Western dance styles. Dance troupes of from 7-20 participants fuse elements of East Indian and Western culture into a 6-9 minute dance performance. This year, teams are coming from University of Michigan, Miami University (Ohio), Case Western Reserve, University of Illinois-Chicago, Wayne State University, University of Virginia, and Xavier University.
“We receive such enthusiasm from the Cincinnati community for this cultural event,” says event coordinator Dhwani Mehta. “We have over 900 people attend the event every year. People have said it is one of the best cultural events to take place in all of Cincinnati.” Xavier’s South Asian Society, founded in 2003, promotes Indian culture throughout the city and shows, through dance, how elements of American culture can integrate and unify with other cultures. Midwest Masala is not exclusive to people of South Asian descent. It aims to incorporate people from all walks of life while promoting unity among the Xavier and Cincinnati communities.
