PRESENTATIONS AND EXHIBITS

 

Tom Knestricht, assistant professor of childhood ed and literacy, will be the keynote speaker at the 2008 Columbus Association for the Education of Young Children's Conference in Columbus, Ohio on February 3 at the Ohio State University. He will also be presenting his research entitled A Trip to Holland: Developing Family Resiliency When Raising Children with Severe Disabilities. The keynote address and presentation are being filmed for a video distributed by Learning Seed / Magna Systems. Knestricht will also present the paper at the 16th Annual National Conference on Parent Education in Dallas, Texas on February 14th and 15th.

 

Joan Tunningley, clinical faculty in occupational therapy, provided an in-service at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center for occupational therapists who are interested in seeking board certification in pediatrics. Joan is only 1 of 3 such certified occupational therapists in the state of Ohio.

 

On January 18, Ginger McKenzie, associate professor of childhood education and literacy, and Gina Lofquist, director of Montessori education, as part of the Xavier University support team, spent the day with the staff at Pleasant Ridge Elementary the first public neighborhood Montessori school, to share their knowledge of Montessori methods and practices.

 

Ron Quinn, former women’s head soccer coach at Xavier, was the featured clinician at the North Carolina State Soccer Association annual general meeting on Saturday, January 26 in Greensboro where he conducted a four-hour workshop for recreational coaches. He then flew to Allentown, PA where he was the guest speaker at the Lehigh Valley Soccer Scholar-Athlete banquet, which honored senior scholar-athletes from over 40 high schools in the Lehigh Valley. During this time, he was inducted into the Lehigh Valley Soccer Hall of Fame for his lifelong interest and contributions to the development of soccer in the Lehigh Valley.

 

AWARDS AND HONORS

 

The Supreme Court Fellows Program is celebrating its 35th anniversary. Paul Fiorelli, director of the Xavier University Williams College of Business Center for Business Ethics and Social Responsibility, attended an afternoon discussion on January 24 with Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg regarding U.S. v. U.K. law at Georgetown Law Center, followed by a reception and dinner at the Supreme Court. Fiorelli was one of four Supreme Court Fellows selected to work in Washington, D.C. between August 1998 and August of 1999. During his year in Washington, Fiorelli received the Justice Thomas Clark Distinguished Fellow Award from Chief Justice Rehnquist. He currently serves as one of sixteen people on the ad hoc advisory group to the United States Sentencing Commission. Professor Fiorelli is also a Senior Fellow in the Washington-based Ethics Resource Center's Fellows Program. He has written extensively and conducted numerous workshops on business ethics.

 

Ann Marie Tracey, assistant professor of legal studies in the Williams College of Business at Xavier, has been elected chair of the Ohio Ethics Commission.

 

Sherrie Human, associate professor in management & entrepreneurship in Xavier’s Williams College of Business, was featured in a January New York Times article as the winner of the 2007 3E Awards. The “3E” - Entrepreneurial Experiential Education - award program identifies innovative ways to get business students involved in learning how to become successful entrepreneurs. Human’s winning project, “Entrepreneurial Ethics: Is it Posturing or Is it Lying?” allows students to experience the complexities and “shades of gray” that entrepreneurs face daily in making decisions, and it forces students to confront their own and others’ differences of opinions regarding these complexities.

Second place in the 3E contest went to Xavier alumna Debbi Brock of Berea College for “Do you want to be an Entrepreneurial Millionaire?” It allows students to learn entrepreneurship concepts in a fun an interactive way. A variety of concepts are taught from funding sources for a small business to conducting marketing research, creativity and innovation and managing a small business.

 

Hamilton County MRDD has nominated Xavier for an Ohio Public Images Award. The university hosted a three-day conference for 110 people with disabilities July 5-7. MRDD says, “University personnel went out of their way to make participants in the conference feel welcome, accommodating many special requests in conjunction with unparalleled accessible accommodations and meals.

Tina Davlin-Peter had her article Perceptual Style and visual contribution to dynamic balance: a pilot study accepted for publication in the journal Perceptual Motor Skills.

 

Tom Hayes, Professor of Marketing had a new book published this week by CASE (Council for the Advancement and Support of Education). It is entitled "University Marketing Mistakes, 50 Pitfalls to Avoid" and co-authored with Roy Adler, Ph.D. Roy is a former Xavier marketing professor who now teaches at Pepperdine University. This is the first of two books that Dr. Hayes will have published this year focusing on the marketing of higher education.
