“For the Bible Tells Me So” at Xavier University

On Tuesday, February 5 from 7-9 pm in the Gallagher Student Center Theatre at Xavier University, the Xavier Alliance will present For the Bible Tells Me So, a new documentary focusing on the lives of five real Christian families who happen to have a gay son or daughter. The film explores can love between two people ever be an abomination? Is the chasm separating gays and lesbians and Christianity too wide to cross? Is the Bible an excuse to hate?  All are welcome & admission is free.

Through the experiences of five very normal, very Christian, very American families - including those of former House Majority Leader Richard Gephardt and Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson - we discover how insightful people of faith handle the realization of having a gay child. Winner of five awards, the Sundance Film Festival awarded For the Bible Tells Me So the 2007 Grand Jury Prize. Sundance reviewers said, “Rather than smacking down with a righteous hammer, director Daniel Karslake simply takes those who would believe that there is no common ground between faith and homosexuality and gently, relentlessly chisels away at every argument that bolsters those beliefs…Karslake shines a light on how often regular people believe what they've been told the Bible says about homosexuality without ever questioning what they've been told.” Conversations with respected voices such as Bishop Desmond Tutu, Harvard University's Peter Gomes, Orthodox Rabbi Steve Greenberg and Reverend Jimmy Creech offer healing, clarity and understanding to anyone caught in the crosshairs of scripture and sexual identity.
