Writer Robert Neuwirth to Speak at Xavier University
Neuwirth to discuss life in squatter communities
11/05/07
Neuwirth’s topic will be “Life in the Shadow Cities: A Vision of the Future.” More than one billion people live in the squatter cities, shanty towns and favelas that have sprung up on the edges of the cities throughout the developing world. While many write off these areas as vast seas of poverty, Neuwirth sees them as vibrant, energetic, communities which will play an increasingly important role in our rapidly expanding urban landscapes. Neuwirth’s new book Shadow Cities is an attempt to humanize these maligned settlements.
Neuwirth’s articles have appeared in many publications, including The Nation, The Village Voice, Newsday, The New York Times, Metropolis and City Limits.
This event is sponsored by Xavier’s Edward E. Brueggeman Center for Dialogue, Northern Kentucky University and the University of Cincinnati.
