Xavier Student Wins Startup Weekend Cincinnati Contest
Vote Nov 21-27 to help him win worldwide
Oakley resident Alex Burkhart has always had good ideas.
He needs our votes to make his latest idea a reality. Voting runs from Nov. 21-27 at http://apps.facebook.com/offerpop/Contest.psp?c=233376&u=50788&a=202991206406825&p=5510679098&rest=0&v=View (Site will be live beginning Nov. 21)
Burkhart graduated from Xavier University in 2011 with a double major in marketing and entrepreneurial studies and is now working on his MBA, where he continues to generate good ideas. This past weekend, he participated in Startup Weekend Cincinnati. Sponsored by companies like Google, Microsoft and Amazon, these are weekend-long, hands-on experiences where aspiring entrepreneurs can find out if their ideas are viable.
Beginning with open mic pitches on Friday, attendees bring their best ideas and inspire others to join their team. On Saturday and Sunday, teams focus on customer development, validating their ideas, practicing LEAN Startup Methodologies and building a minimal viable product. On Sunday evening, teams demo their prototypes and receive valuable feedback from a panel of experts.
Alex’s idea, Ticket Share, is an app that lets fans swap their tickets when they aren’t going to use them and get a ticket for a different event. As the last team standing, Alex and his two teammates get free office space in the Brandery for six months, free legal advice, $1,000 worth of web design and entry in the Startup Weekend world competition beginning Wednesday.
The team has created a video for Internet users around the world to vote on. TicketShare will go up against 120 other winners from around the world. If it finishes among the top 15, the team will be invited to present before Silicon Valley venture capitalists.
“I have always been a big sports fan and have visited every major league arena in the U.S.,” says Burkhart. “As an entrepreneurship student, I always come up with and evaluate new ideas. I incorporated a lot of the skills I have learned at my employer, Macy’s, and got a couple of other participants to join my team. It has been a great experience and I have gotten great feedback.”
