Science: Majors & Minors
Political
science studies the theory and practice of government
and politics. Xavier's program is structured to give
students a systematic view of the various elements of
political science, including American government, comparative
government, political theory, and international relations.
Xavier's political science majors, upon graduation,
are equipped with knowledge of the basic principles
of government and political theory. In addition to formal
course work, students are encouraged to include job
experience by participating in an internship in their
program. The department sponsors intern programs in
Cincinnati and Washington, D.C., as well as foreign
study programs in Europe.
To major in political science, 18 semester hours of
specified political science courses and 12 hours of
elective political science courses are required.
To strengthen and broaden the background of all Xavier
students, a liberal arts core curriculum consisting
of courses in history, economics, literature, fine arts,
mathematics, modern language, philosophy, science and
theology is also required.
Upon successful completion of the undergraduate program,
students receive a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in political
science.
To minor in political science, 15 hours of specified
political science courses must be completed. In addition,
a 2.000 cumulative average must be maintained in the
political science courses.
Requirements for an Associate of Arts degree in political
science include 15 hours of specified political science
courses in addition to the Xavier core curriculum. Also,
a 2.000 cumulative average must be maintained in the
political science courses.
