Peace and Justice Programs

Activities

Shantytown

This week-long program sponsored cooperatively by many organizations on campus raises awareness surrounding the issues of homelessness.Full of speakers, action, reflection and community-building, it makes for a special, thought-provoking event.

VegOut Community Dinner

All are welcome to host or join in our free, weekly community meal each Monday at 5:00 p.m. This is a great chance to relax, meet or spend time with new and old friends, and learn more about what's going on around campus. During cold weather months, dinners are hosted in the 3rd floor atrium of GSC and during warmer months, meals are held at the Dorothy Day House. Contact Kateri Whitley (whitleyk@xavier.edu) to sign-up to host.

SOA/WHINSEC Delegation

Each November, Xavier sends a delegation of up to 50 students for the Ignatian Family Teach-In and SOA/WHINSEC rally held annually in Ft. Benning, GA. Sponsored by Voices of Solidarity, a Peace & Justice Club, the trip is a powerful educational opportunity for students to experience a successful social movement, the intersection of a myriad of social justice concerns, and reflect upon the impact of international policy internationally as well as personally. Contact Board Chair, Katie Anthony (anthonyk@xavier.edu) for more information.

Urban Plunge Immersion

This immersion experiece will take place on Nov. 6-8 and Nov. 13-15, 2009. The Fall experiences will only be open to first year students. It is a chance to immerse yourself in urban Cincinnati to learn through experience about social injustice, solidarity, and how faith can respond to poverty. Urban Plunge is a collaborative effort between Peace & Justice Programs, Campus Ministry, and two local non-profit organizations. Sign ups will be available in the Dorothy Day House in early October. Just Off Victory Community Garden

The “Just Off Victory” Community Garden, in it's pilot year, is a unique initiative spearheaded by Peace & Justice Programs (located behind the Dorothy Day House) to promote and facilitate a motion of faculty, staff, and students toward a more healthy, sustainable lifestyle. Composed of 6 plots, portions of the garden are tended by teams of faculty/staff and students from departments and offices across the University. Bi-monthly educational and community building events are planned for participants and other interested community members. See our 2009 Season of Events for more information. The garden serves as a gathering place both formally and informally where relationships can be built, lessons learned, and quality of campus life improved.

To learn more about the effort, check out the "Community Gardens" article on the Xavier Sustainability website.
