Women and Girls of Ohio Gain Momentum in 2010

On March 8, International Women’s Day will be recognized in a unique way in the state of Ohio.  Momentum 2010: Ohio Women’s Summit will bring diverse women and men together from throughout the state to focus on strengthening our families and communities by promoting the advancement of women through education, economics and health.

The daylong summit features plenary sessions and breakout workshops focusing on the multiple issues affecting women in the state of Ohio and throughout the nation.

Of particular note is the Closing Session, featuring Valerie Jarrett, White House Senior Advisor Assistant to the President (Intergovernmental Affairs and Public Engagement) and Chair for the White House Council on Women and Girls.

In an effort to create a lasting movement ushering in a new era of gender equality in Ohio, a Young Women’s Summit will take place March 7 to correspond with the Ohio Women’s Summit.  Hundreds of young women ages 12 to 18 will travel to Columbus to participate in fun and educational workshops selected to focus on young women’s education, health and economic situations.

The Xavier University Women's Center has been working closely with the Ohio Governor’s Office for Women’s Initiatives and Outreach to make these exciting events possible for Ohio women and girls, including the students, faculty, staff and alumnae of Xavier University.  The Women's Center is coordinating efforts to register women and young women for the summits, as well as facilitate carpooling.
