Tutoring Services: Supporting Academic Success
As proud parents of Xavier students, you recognize the importance of the academic support services that are available to help your student succeed in college. The Learning Assistance Center (LAC) is one of many offices at Xavier that is committed to supporting students’ success. The LAC offers various tutoring services, free of charge to all Xavier students. These tutoring services include one-on-one subject specific tutoring, study skills assistance, drop-in tutoring sessions and Supplemental Instruction (SI) sessions.
Midterm grades will be posted soon, giving your student the opportunity to gauge progress in their courses. If there is a class your student would like additional support in, she may consider requesting a tutor. To request a tutor, a student may come to the LAC on the fifth floor of the Michael J. Conaton Learning Commons, Room 514 or complete an online request form.
So far this semester, the LAC has received more than 560 tutoring requests for one-on-one tutoring, in almost all subjects that are offered on campus—from Spanish to biology to calculus to accounting. As a result of high demand, your student may be placed on a wait list. Please be aware that we are hiring additional tutors to meet student needs. Additionally, encourage your student to talk to their professor and classmates for assistance.
In addition to one-on-one tutoring, the LAC offers drop-in sessions in music theory, Spanish and physics. For an hour or two each week, there is a tutor available, and students in the course only need to “drop-in” to ask questions and receive assistance.
The Supplemental Instruction (SI) program provides additional support to students in historically difficult courses. At Xavier, SI is offered for general biology, general chemistry, anatomy and physiology, and organic chemistry. SI leaders are trained LAC tutors who attend the class that they support and provide hour-long review sessions three times a week, integrating “how to learn” with “what to learn.”
Research shows that students who regularly participate in SI sessions earn higher course grades, withdraw less often, and have higher reenrollment and graduation rates than non-participants. This is the third year SI has been offered – and it has been highly successful.

Additional tutoring resources at Xavier include the Math Lab and the Writing Center, both on the fourth floor of the Michael J. Conaton Learning Commons. Please encourage your student to use these resources as well.
For more information, contact the LAC at (513) 745-3280. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
