Test time brings increased demand for LAC services
It’s that time of the semester–students are taking their first tests and midterms. The multitude of tests undoubtedly creates anxiety and, so, increased demand for the services of the Learning Assistance Center (LAC).
The LAC has had over 330 one-on-one tutoring requests so far this semester – a 35 percent increase compared to spring 2009.
The first test of the semester tends to be stressful because students may be unfamiliar with a professor’s format and expectations. When looking for additional assistance preparing for a test or test-taking strategies, direct your student to the LAC web site at www.xavier.edu/lac/Test-Taking.cfm. For additional assistance, your student may contact the LAC to schedule a tutoring session on study skills.
For papers, students can turn to the Writing Center for guidance. The center is located in the basement of Alter Hall and provides assistance for all stages of the writing process.
If it’s numbers your student needs help with, encourage him or her to visit the Math Lab on the first floor of Hinkle Hall. The Math Lab provides a drop-in tutoring service for students in any math courses from MATH 105 through MATH 171.
The LAC is located on the first floor of Kuhlman Hall and provides one-on-one tutoring in most subjects; drop-in tutoring in Spanish, physics, and music theory; supplemental instruction in anatomy & physiology, general biology, general chemistry and organic chemistry. View the complete schedule at www.xavier.edu/lac/Supplemental-Instruction-and-Drop-In-Sessions.cfm.
If your student has a documented disability and is registered at the LAC, remind them that they must complete paperwork each semester for accommodations. Complete the online form at www.xavier.edu/lac/Release-Form.cfm. For your background, LAC students must give us at least a two days’ notice if they want to take a test in the LAC.
In closing, talk to your son or daughter about how they performed on their first tests of the semester. If there is a class or two that they need additional assistance in, encourage them to utilize the available tutoring services. The LAC’s goal is your student’s success. Feel free to contact us at (513) 745-3280 with questions or inquiries for additional information.
