Newswire Official Rating:
Jennifer Garner may seem like she has it all. Although her husband’s career may need CPR soon, her own career has been smooth sailing (if you don’t count “Elektra”). She has a new daughter and her new movie “Catch and Release” just came out in theaters.
While the trailers sure did catch my attention, the movie should have never been released. It clearly was a half-hearted attempt to make an emotional film that could be used as a conversation piece.
Garner plays Gray Wheeler, a woman who is grieving over the loss of her fiancé, who has been killed in a freak accident. Her life, and impending wedding plans are halted immediately and she is overwhelmed with grief.
Her husband’s friends, Dennis and Sam, who are going through their own ways of dealing with this loss, help her get through this terrible time. Added to the mix is her dead fiancé’s long time friend, Fritz, who is quite the ladies man. And while Gray and Fritz are obviously attracted to one another, the story of their impending love is put on the backburner when Garner slowly begins to discover that her fiancé may have been leading a double life.
Garner finds out that her husband had many encounters with another woman, Maureen, who is one of those California health freaks and is the father of her young son. While Maureen, hilariously played by Juliette Lewis ,and her young, adorable son bond with everyone, Gray learns that her fiancé was sending them money to support young Mattie.
At the end, they learn that Mattie is really the son of some other guy and that their whole trip was for nothing. Garner leaves beautiful, gorgeous and majestic Colorado for sunny California to be with Fritz.
I really found myself emotionally exhausted when I left the theater and it took me hours upon hours to figure out if the movie was worthwhile or not. I decided that since I couldn’t decide, it had to less than spectacular. Other than it being set in Colorado, the best state in the union, and the hilarity of Juliette Lewis and Kevin Smith, who played Sam, the movie seemed to miss that spark that makes movies so wonderful.
Garner is a great actress, and played the part well, but it was hard to believe that a grieving woman would fall for a bad boy like Fritz. I simply could not get into the story between them, maybe because I was completely distracted by another story dealing with parentage and DNA tests that I felt like I was watching a bad soap opera.
This story had a lot of depth and potential, but it simply had too much frivolous fluff going on to really concentrate on Garner’s character development. Plus, Dennis, who was such a sweet guy throughout the entire movie, loved Gray from afar, and when he admitted it to her, he got shot down.
This really broke my heart too, and movies that entitle romance shouldn’t be breaking hearts all over the place with secondary characters. Garner herself may be a catch as an actress, but this film did not have the best release.

As I sit here trying to remember the fuzzy haze that was the Super Bowl and this past weekend in general, one thought runs through my mind. No, not my hatred for Lindsay Lohan, though that is still there, but instead I wonder why my favorite beer decided to have Carlos Mencia be one of their spokesmen for this year’s Super Bowl.
So to get that dreadful commercial out of my mind, I give you the complete rundown of the commercials that made a dull Super Bowl XLI somewhat exciting.
Things started off with a funny commercial from Budweiser when they showed two guys playing rock, paper, scissors for the last beer. It ended with one guy throwing a rock at the other guy to take the last beer.
It was a funny commercial, but it reminded me too much of a Sprint commercial last year when a guy threw his cell phone at another guy to prevent him from stealing it. That mixed with the whole Carlos Mencia thing has caused me to take drastic measures.
I am calling for a boycott of all Budweiser beer, which now includes Rolling Rock. For those of you who are keeping score at home, that is a boycott for Lindsay Lohan and Budweiser.
The only way Budweiser can redeem themselves is if the guy with the axe and beer in another Bud commercial killed Carlos Mencia, but I’m not holding my breath for that to happen.
This leads us to the next series of commercials for godaddy.com, though it was only one commercial throughout the entire night, so I’m not sure if you can call it a series of commercials, but that’s besides the point.
The point is, the commercial could be mistaken for a soft-core porn in some states and religious circles, and I believe Trishelle from Real World Las Vegas was briefly in it as well. So to show my dedication to you all, I will watch this commercial many times just to make sure I got the information right.
Now finally the two most talked about commercials, the Snickers man kiss and the Nationwide K-Fed dabacle. Both of these commercials have many things wrong with them. For the Snickers man kiss, I find it wrong that they say guys have to pull out chest hair just to prove their manliness.
Also, Snickers isn’t that good of a candy bar to kiss over. If it was a Butterfinger then it would make more sense. The reason the K-Fed debacle is wrong is because it features K-Fed, plain and simple.
As I come to the end of this edition of “Unrated,” I realize that I only talked about the commercials that sucked and did not even mention the great ones such as Emerald Nuts with Robert Goulet, FedEx in space and Sierra Mist with Jim Gaffigan. Oh well, better luck next time.
Well that’s all for this week, I’m off to be a consumer whore.
