Coming to a campus near you

A look at what’s new in 2007

Auxiliary Services
Weekend brunch at the cafe will now feature waffles emblazoned with the Xavier X.

As the new semester kicks off, Auxiliary Services and Student Government Association have been hard at work to bring changes across campus.

After Kinko’s vacated its location on the ground floor of Gallagher Student Center, the space has become “The Student Business Development Center,” which will serve as a headquarters for existing businesses like FliX, Xpress Laundry Service and Muskie Mart.

According to Tom Barlow, the Director of Auxiliary Services, “the facilities will support Dr. Tom Clark’s Entrepreneurial Center’s goals to build student run business on campus.”

SGA President Steve Bentley is also very confident that soon a student-operated convenience store will be opened in this space. “The center will only grow,” he said.

Bentley also shared that there will be a contest to name the new Student Business Development Center. “We’re looking for something catchy,” he said.

Elsewhere in the GSC, most students will be happy to discover that Burger King has moved out to make way for the Blue Gibbon Chinese restaurant. After the architectural designs for the new facility are completed and approved and building permits are obtained, remodeling can begin.

It’s estimated that the restaurant will be moved in around spring break, roughly the same timeframe it took to move Subway.
Ryan’s Pub, “Xavier’s Sports Café,” has undergone a dramatic makeover, with new hours, new food items and lowered prices.

Coming soon to Gallagher

The Student Business Development Center

WHAT: A home for student-run business on campus.

WHERE: In the former home of Kinkos on the ground floor of the GSC.

The Blue Gibbon

WHAT: A locally and family owned Chinese restaurant.

WHERE: The former home of Burger King in the GSC food court.

WHEN: Early March.

Future changes for Ryan’s include a 100 CD jukebox, a tournament dart game, mega-touch flat screen trivia game and a Golden-T video game. “After Jim Miller and I renegotiated the amusement agreement, this will not be an additional cost to student government,” said Barlow.

Most underclassmen have probably noticed a few changes in the Dining Hall as well. Weekend brunch goers will notice that the waffles served now bear the Xavier Univesity logo. “When I saw an article last May in a food management magazine about how the ivy-league schools were having their waffles logoed, I thought this would be a great value added for our Xavier customers as well,” said Barlow. “We also deserve only the best.”

The Dining Hall has also changed its pizza style, with a different type of crust and new display menus. The self-serve pizza station seems to be a big hit among the students, who swoop down immediately after each pizza is pulled out of the oven.

All of these changes have taken place in response to student and staff needs, in an effort to start serving “The Best of Cincinnati.” In keeping with Xavier’s mission of excellence, Barlow said, “Again, we are expanding our service to the students.”

Harris, Granderson explode in second half to take shootout

Freshman Amber Harris’ 32 points helped push X over the Bearcats.

The Xavier women’s basketball team showcased its experience and resilience against the Cincinnati Bearcats, rallying from a 14-point deficit to win 89-76 in the women’s Crosstown Shootout last Wednesday at Fifth Third Arena.

Senior guard Suntana Granderson and freshman forward Amber Harris combined for 38 second-half points and 55 overall as the Musketeers finally found an answer to the trap defense that terrorized them for most of the first half.

It was indeed a tale of two halves for Xavier. The Musketeers turned the ball over on each of their first three possessions, and eight times in the first 11 minutes of the game. Cincinnati’s strong pressure and aforementioned trapping defense led to the majority of Xavier’s turnovers.

Numerous second chance scoring opportunities gave the Bearcats a 27-13 lead midway through the first half.

Xavier chipped away at the lead for the remainder of the half, getting as close as 40-34 before halftime.

Xavier’s patience and mental toughness paid off as Cincinnati’s turnovers began to add up in the second half, while Granderson and Harris came alive to spark the Musketeer offense.

With Cincinnati on the ropes and clinging to a 66-60 lead with 9:43 remaining in the game, a jumper by sophomore guard Jerri Taylor sparked a 12-0 run by Xavier over the next 3:20 during which Granderson scored eight consecutive points.

A three-point play by senior guard Michele Miller with 1:36 left put Xavier ahead by eight and put the game out of reach for Cincinnati.
Harris led the team with a career high 32 points to go along with five blocked shots. Granderson finished with 23 points and three steals.
The seeming polarity between the two halves was not lost on Xavier players.

“Coach told us we needed to play with more intensity, more focus,” Miller said. “We were a little tentative out there, their press was kind of slowing us down.”

“In the second half we just thought, ‘It’s time to attack them and play our game,’” said Granderson. “We told Amber, ‘Just attack, you’re faster than anyone on their team.’ She attacked, and we got easy buckets in transition.”

About 10,500 were on hand for this year’s Shootout, though it was officially a sold out game, making it the highest attended women’s basketball game in the history of the city of Cincinnati.

Harris said she thrives in atmospheres like that. “I love playing in crowds like that, it boosts your confidence,” she said. “We have a chance to show people we can play so they can come out and see our other games and not just the Shootout.”

The women take on the Dukes of Duquesne this Friday. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at Cintas Center.
