Many Xavier students have already begun to notice the signs posted in the laundry rooms of their residence halls that remind them to utilize all the money that they have on their petty cash accounts before the end of the semester. The university will soon complete its implementation of the new pre-paid student account system known as “X-Cash.” However, many students are still confused about the specifics of this new system which will act as a replacement for Muskie money and petty cash.
William E. Moran, the Associate Director of Auxiliary Services, suggests that the new X-Cash system will offer the students more benefits, and it promises to be more flexible and secure than the old petty-cash system.
One of the benefits of the new pre-paid service is that students will be able to place money on their All Card using not only cash, but also MasterCard and Visa (hopefully by the summer) using the X-Cash kiosks now located in Gallagher and in the library.
Students who are concerned that two kiosks are not enough and that they might have to tread through the snow to the two locations to add money to their cards need not worry. Moran confirms that by early spring semester, the X-Cash system will offer online financial management. Students will be able to add to and transfer funds from different accounts to their All-Card in the comfort of their dorm rooms, while in their pajamas.
This would certainly grant students more financial independence as they would not only be able to conduct their monetary transactions online and view their account history, but their parents and family would also have the option of transferring money directly to them using the system’s guest log-in feature.
An online account also raises the question of security. But Moran promises that students’ X-Cash accounts will be thoroughly protected. In the event that someone loses their All Card, their money will be safe as the card holder may request that a hold be placed on their account.
Most of the on-campus food services, bookstore, post office, laundry and Flix are now accepting X-Cash. Moran hopes that by the summer the copiers and vending machines will be merged into the X-Cash system while the Student Activities Council (SAC) is pursuing off-campus local businesses to recognize the AllCard as a legitimate monetary account during the course of next year.
As a note, board points will not be affected in any way, but if students’ board points run out before the end of the semester, their X-Cash funds will substitute.
To open an X-Cash account, students can phone into the All-Card Office at 513-745-3374 or toll free at 800 344-GOXU; to pay with Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Discover card, mail payments using check or credit card to Xavier University, All Card Center, 3800 Victory Parkway, Cincinnati, OH 45207-2151 (please include your Xavier student ID number on the check); or students can walk in and make payments at the All Card Center located in the Gallagher Student Center, room 270.

The Xavier Players and University Singers went back to the eighties last weekend. The two clubs put on a production of “Totally 80s Snowball,” an interactive event featuring crazy characters playing students at Franciscan North High School. The Armory was set up as if it was the real home to a high school dance. The actors each developed a character and used that to interact with the audience in an improvisional format along the lines of “Tony and Tina’s Wedding.” Junior Abbie Larkin explains what this meant to her.
“I played Kelly Thomson, vice president of student body, member of every club at Franciscan North, and full of energy because she’s a speed addict,” she explained. “I loved building the history of our characters and how we all related to each other. With a solid foundation, it was easy to improvise with audience members and castmates each night. It was amazing when we finally had people to interact with, the audience handled us well and I was pleasantly surprised with how well the audience jumped into the action.”
Senior Ed Stockhausen, who played part of a rebel couple as the expelled student Zachary Pierce Ramonez, also felt that the audience added to the show.
“ Practicing without an audience was difficult because eventually we lost our steam. That is to say, improvisation became a little boring in the final days thankfully, the audience really helped us out by getting so involved and making it such a fantastic experience,” he said.
Larkin commented on the uniqueness of this approach to a show.
“In a show like this, there isn’t a script or blocking. Everything stems from your character development and what feels right,” she said. “It was liberating once I knew who Kelly was I knew how she’d react in any situation. The fluidity of the show kept every night fresh and exciting. My greatest challenge was the constant movement and energy required of a speed addict.”
Both Larkin and Stockhausen felt that the dancing from the University Singers added to the experience.
“Totally 80’s Snowball was an amazing collaboratory effort between the University Singers and Xavier Players,” Larkin said.
In the end, Stockhausen appreciated the unique oppurtunity he had to get to know the cast.
“We were never sure how the event would actually work, or if it would win over the audience,” he said. “Using our characters, we got to know each other and become friends. That wouldn’t otherwise have happened, because all of us are involved in such different organizations and activities on campus.”

This year, students did not see the line of tents around Cintas Center or get to experience the joys of spending four days sleeping outside on the sidewalk as they waited for primo tickets to the Crosstown Shootout. Instead, the most anticipated game of the season will be played at the home of the bearcats; however, students will still be able to catch the action even if they were not one of the 50 musketeers who received tickets.
The game will not be broadcasted on local TV, but students and fans will be able to attend viewing parties to watch the more than 70 year long rivalry. The student party will be in Schmidt Fieldhouse, while the general public can watch the game in the Duff Banquet Center of Schiff Family Conference Center. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. in the Fieldhouse, and at 6 p.m. tonight in the banquet center.
In years past, the Student Activities Council (SAC) has provided a viewing party for students in the cafeteria. This year, X-treme fans has combined with SAC to create a larger audience for more fun and more school support.
“When the party was only in the caf, there wasn’t very much room, so that’s why we joined forces this year,” said coordinator of the student viewing party, senior Alison Rasper.
Along with getting in free, there are other perks to attending the student party. The first 900 students will receive a 16 oz. glass with the Crosstown Shootout logo on it. There will also be food from Skyline, LaRosa’s and Busken.
The biggest benefits will be in the raffles that will take place throughout the entire game. Two Visa gift cards, two iPod nanos, a laptop, two tickets for next year’s Shootout, and the use of Fr. Graham’s box seats during a women’s game will be given out at different times during the night.
“It will be a great environment to get students involved and supportive of the Xavier athletes, which is the goal of X-treme fans,” said Rasper.
In the Duff Banquet Center, the general public, including fans, alumni and staff, will also be rooting for the Muskies. This viewing party is also free to attend; however, food and beverages must be purchased. Skyline and LaRosa’s will once again be part of the meal.
There have been other viewing parties in the past for NCAA games, but this is the first time the general public will come together to watch a Crosstown Shootout.
“There has been an overwhelming interest in the game from fans this year, and since there is also limited TV broadcasting of the game, we decided to have the viewing party,” said XU Athletics representative Brian Hicks.
The game will be broadcast by ESPNU, which is why it will not be available to the community through Time-Warner Cable. “…But that’s a whole other can of worms,” said Hicks.
Through the Xavier National Alumni Association, there will be close to 40 more viewing parties across the nation much like the one here at Xavier.
“The UC-Xavier rivalry is one of the best in all of college basketball. We want to have a place for fans to watch and cheer together,” said Hicks.
