Season to kickoff October 21 at Norwood High School
Xavier’s club football coach, Tom Powers, held the first team practice Friday – one that included skill drills, conditioning, agility skills and time to assess the future of the young team.
Club football, an item on the Bentley, Moorman, Byrd’s Student Government executive ticket, has been making progress since the spring of last year. Coach Powers was hired in May, and brings with him much determination to work with Student Government to get the program off the ground. [full story]
Event planners Cate Guentter and Jacqui Taylor have invited two Xavier alumni to give their firsthand experience of the terrorist attacks. The September 11 memorial will also include an interfaith candlelight vigil, followed by a showing of the documentary, “9/11.”
“We’re keeping this unpolitical – it’s not about the war or its after-effects – it’s about commemorating people,” said Taylor, a member of the planning committee. [full story]
Xavier marks the beginning of the new semester with a Mass called the Spirit Celebration. This, according to Fr. Darryl Burns, a campus priest, is to generate a sense of community among the students, faculty and staff at the university. [full story]

While students can feel safe walking around campus, the murder of Phil Bates and other recent events serve as tragic reminders that the neighborhoods surrounding campus can be quite dangerous.

It was only a matter of time until Hollywood started to make films about this tragedy. This summer started and ended with two films, both about the events of September 11, but both dealing with different aspects of that fateful day.
Oliver Stone, the director, who is most famous for directing movies that tackle other hard subjects, such as the Vietnam War, went on a wide press junket tour, sitting down with a lot of the youth and other people whose lives were closely affected by this tragedy.
No one said that the September 11 movies would do well, but they have exceeded expectations. [full story]
October is the month in which things will start to kick off, starting with “Caribbean Blend,” which is basically storytelling in a more tropical and calypso form. Don’t look for any Captain Jack Sparrows here. Their first big production will be shortly after that. “Noises Off” is notorious for being a hilarious play about an acting troupe that can’t seem to do anything right.[full story]
Today in 1996, Tupac Shakur was shot.
According to The History Channel, he died. All I’m saying is that it’s a little too much of a coincidence that it happens to be on Gloria Gaynor’s birthday, the woman who was made famous from the song, “I will survive.” That’s all I’m saying.
It’s also Google Commemoration day. I’m just saying, when you google “Tupac Shakur,” click “I’m feeling lucky” and enter the site, you’ll hear a pretty alive-sounding Tupac voice. That’s all I’m saying.
“The Break Up” plays at 11 p.m. tonight in the GSC Theater. “Tupac Resurrection” is a much better movie.
That’s all I’m saying. [full week]
