DocTalk

Dear Doc,

Which is safer for your body: alcohol or marijuana?

Signed,
Chapter 4:20

Dear 4:20,

Excessive use of either substance can have signifcant health effects.

Alcohol abuse can lead to liver disease, heart disease, certain cancers and brain damage. It can destroy families and lead to legal problems (DUIs).

Marijuana abuse can lead to throat and lung cancers, memory and cognitive problems, and exacerbate mental illness. It, too, can lead to legal problems.

Be high on life! Artificial highs lead to long term problems.

Dear Doc,

I have a lot of problems remembering things. I have so many classes and I work long hours to pay for school. I have trouble managing all this. What should I do?

Signed,
Lost

Dear Lost,

Your memory problems may be due to multiple factors.

It may just be due to your hectic schedule and missing sleep. It could be due to common medical problems like thyroid disease.

See a physician to rule out medical problems. You should also see a counselor for stress and time management.

Dear Doc,

I heard that one strain of the flu isn’t responding to antiviral drugs.

Is there any vaccine left?

Signed,
D. Grippa

Dear Grippa,

It’s true that the influenza A virus is resistant to two standard antiviral drugs (amantiadine and flumadine).

However, we have not yet had a significant flu outbreak yet in our area.

Here are a couple options using your Mastercard:

Flu Shot: $20, Tamiflu Antiviral Medicine: $100. Missing a week of class: priceless!
